Hi Frank from NZ, as I recall Lexois(?) was about half an hour from Oporto. She was the port of call I believe that was the cause of Abbotsford having ten/ twelve feet cut off her bow, so she looked like she'd been punched. So on leaving Lexois we were told to secure and shortly after we'd be tied up in Oporto. Maybe google earth will reveal it.
PS Abbotsford ended her days wrecked off Panama. I always think of my old ships as still sailing but they're probably razor blades and hondas now. Sorry if I digressed a wee bit. Regards to you and yours , Ronnie

Hi Frank, must put a penny in the meter more often! Tried it myself on google earth,Porto de leixoes Portugal, clicked on the magnifying glass and away we went. Not the Leixoes we knew mate but a biggish container terminal. Still, it's there. Ronnie

Did my first trip on deck on the Urshalim in 1970, as D.H.U., after 6 years in the engine room (not the Urshalims!). Joined Rotterdam, sailed to Curacao, where I proceeded to put up the Dutch flag upside down on the foremast. My first bollocking and not the last. Paid off in Belfast. regards, Tony Geeves.

Oh so many, but the one that made the biggest impression on me was my first trip & arriving in Whilliamstad, Curacao, I had never seen a castle in the tropics. Was told it was Capt. Morgan's (?) looked so delightful up on the cliff top. Had me thinking of, 'avast ye lubbers' 'Blind Pugh', 'Blackbeard', 'pieces of eight', ah a very young lads imagination going wild. Even today can recall looking over the stern & seeing the props, to me just amazing. After that parts of Cuba, Haiti, Sth America, all memorable for their quaintness or quirkiness, let alone the times we had. Richard

Pontianack in Borneo in the 50's to 70's, anchored in the middle of the jungle and when the workers disappeared around 1800 hours, they wouldn't work at night because of all the wildlife, you could have been the only thing on the planet apart from the strange calls eminating from the jungle. Wonderful but eery............memories don't you just love em! Cannot be too many places left like that now which were on then normal trading routes

My very first trip to sea as a 16 year old, old Haines Treworlas to Botwood New Foundland, rolls of paper, back to London , 28 days. Can remember the beauty of the place( didn`t know it was dry, as at that stage wasn`t into drinking), all the magic of a first trip, came home Jack the lad!!! KT

San Francisco do Sul in Brazil was a lovely quiet place where you could have a few drinks in peace and even go swimming on a small quiet beach. Loved the place.

I thought milford sound in s New zealand was awsome and made the ship feel very small . Pago Pago south seas a very islandy feel and not comercialized yet , the people all slept in long huts of bamboo . and a young maiden took advantage of me .:cool:

Hi Neville I was in Pago Pago this year in February. Pronounced Pang Pango.
It was Valentines Day, 14 February and as I walked around town I had three beautiful Samoan Girls give me a hug and a big Kiss. I went to the coast to some cliffs and another girl gave me a hug and a big kiss all saying Happy Valentines Day. SHE wasnt too pleased as no one said it to HER. We then went into Sadie Thompsons Bar for a bevie.
`And you can wipe that Lipstick off and that smile on your face.`.
Pago Pago is a beautiful Place.

This site is truly educational ! .I never knew that either.I’ve never been there, so I’ve always thought it was pronounced Pago Pago( to rhyme with Sago) all these years.

Q Why is Pago Pago pronounced pango pango?
A. Early Christian missionaries to the islands carried printing presses and movable type so they could produce phonetic bibles in the local language. Because the language spoken in the islands is pronounced with an "n" following every "a," they didn't bring enough n's. It was just implied: every time you see an "a," treat it as "an."
