    Default Missing Ship El Faro.

I haven't seen anything on the news about this ship which appears to have disappeared in Hurricane Joaquin.

Built 1974, rebuilt 1995/2006 had the main deck extended (to carry more containers)so it protruded over the sheer strakes, giving the deck an appearance of a mini aircraft carrier. Also had additional side ports fitted into the hull for vehicular and fork lift access. Crew had reported water entering the vessel through the side ports prior to their last known position, this reported to Falmouth Coastguard by vessel and relayed then to US Coastguard. Also another vessel in the same area 220 feet long foundered in same area but all 12 crew rescued by merchant vessel and transferred to US Coaatguard vessel by helicopter, Falmouth also instrumental in the initial reports. It is reported that the 'El faro' had scheduled its course to pass through the eye of the hurricane and that the Owner/Managers (TOTE) are very strict with their masters about maintaining schedules

The US is now treating the El Faro as sunk and is looking for survivores. There were 28 US citizens on board lets hope they find them soon.

Latest via British Seafarers: The Containership El Faro has sunk whilst sailing through Hurricane Joaquin The American containership El Faro has sunk whilst on passage from Jacksonville, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico. The US Coastguard stated today that they where no longer looking for the vessel but where searching for survivors. They have found a heavily damaged lifeboat with El Faro's markings on it and one deceased person in a survival suit in the water.

One life bouy was also found close to where she is thought to have gone down. Somehow I think she will not be found floating.

What I don't understand is that they found one body in a survival suit and a rescue swimmer swum over to confirm the occupant was dead, which he was, the swimmer then cast the body adrift, the Coastguard stating time spent in recovering it would impinge upon the time looking for other possible survivors, they then had to recover the swimmer from the water, so why not recover the body at the same time and give at least one family closure. The Coastguard state they have no hope of locating the body again. Am I alone in thinking their attitude to the body recovery was wrong.

    Yes,
I saw that Ivan, I thought it was a terrible thing to do.
Maybe they do not like to handle the dead., It cannot harm them.
Doesn't take that long to pick up a body if the Diver is already in the water with it.
The body is required for the Inquest, a verdict on the cause of death would be given, maybe he was killed, by other crew men and dumped into the sea, or he died of Hypothermia, or died of drowning and any other cause of death.
    This has to be recorded.
and for the ones who are not recovered an open verdict would be given.
    Cheers
    Brian.
