Re: Football Hooligism
John, I was a regular at football grounds the country over for years, My 4 sons are all L.F.C. Supporters. Believe it or not they see it first hand and always do the same thing as the majority they walk away it is a very small minority that cause trouble at football grounds and usually it occurs away from the ground as in this horrific case you mention. But sadly there are a lot of youth out of control these days not just at football grounds but in all the major cities and towns. And until we get a government who realize that 24 hour drinking in the U.K. Was the worse piece of legislation ever in this country. The burden on the police, fire, ambulance, And the misery it has brought to very many people over the country, You turn your radio on every Monday morning there will be some poor soul who was in the wrong place the wrong time and has lost there lives and wrecked others for ever. It has to be reversed, And close all these booze outlets that are only to willing to sell anyone a bottle of cheap cider £2 a litre, Or 4 cans of strong lager which most of these yobs are fuled on for pennies. Terry.

Re: Football Hooligism
Hi Terry,
Totally agree with your comment, mate, although, I think, other factors contribute to this anti-social behaviour. It seems it's a 'disease' peculiar to the male of the species (although there have been notable exceptions). Although not restricted to a particular social strata (or 'class' if you prefer), many are primed with a sense of disadvantage and also, perhaps, a feeling of insignificance in an uncaring world. Like most young men with testosterone levels going through the roof they share a primeaval urge to attain 'alpha' status, although most eventually realise that, for them, it's just not going to happen. Frustrated, but still left with a need to 'belong' they see merit in the mindless aggression of hooliganism. Add to this an uncontrolled consumption of alcohol and you have the recipe for trouble with a capital T. Until Governments, both national and local, are prepared to introduce appropriate and effective measures (legislation and education) to address the problem it will never go away. In these times of economic and social downturn the cost in terms of damage to property and wasteful use of human resources (Police, Fire and Ambulance Services) is a drain upon the public purse....and all because of a disgruntled, mindless minority. Like you, mate, I think a tightening of the liquor laws would be a step in the right direction, but then, civil libertarians and those with vested interest would tell you different...
and so it goes on!
.........Roger
p.s. Have a happy Crimbo, mate.

Re: Football Hooligism
The problem with many of the hooligan groups is a deep seated and long held, indeed inbred, hatered of the other side. Until this is gone from society the conflict will continue.
Add to this along with the grog, all the drugs of modern society, and you have an in built recipe for total disater. There have been numerous attempts here inMelbourne to quell the anger that thye show, even to the extent of not reporting via the media, but to little avail.
Here in Victorai we have some rather obtuse boating regulation, each boat going out onto the bay must carry 8 flares, these must be replaced every two years. For some reason only known to the authorities there is no where to safely dispose of the old one. So on many an occasion at the football flares will be the order of the day. How society evetualy deals with this issue remains one of conjecture, whilst the authorities pay lip service to the problem little factual evidence thta it is doing any good.
Add to that the approach by the magistrates, many of whom consider a slap on the wrist to be sufficient.

Re: Football Hooligism
In the circles that I moved in and the circles that I move in now and the areas that I frequent I see far lees drunkenness now that the pubs are open all day that I ever seen in the 50's and 60's.People can go in at their leisure now and are not chasing the 3.00 o'clock throwing out time. The Liverpool docker has gone now, believe me there was a lot of drinking and many dockers going home drunk, they would work the welt and end up in the Irish Club or many of the dock road pubs where you could give a tap on the window for a stay behind.I am as guilty as anybody for never having had enough by 3pm or 2.30pm Sunday I always headed down the dock road to one of the pubs that I knew I could get in.As I say it's a long time since I seen a drunken person. Now you are talking about the young ones, they drink in the house before they go into town clubbing it,they are part way out of it before they leave the house. It was my granddaughters birthday last week a gang of her mates were meeting at her house and then going into Liverpool the table was booked for 10.30pm then to a club afterwards,we were on our way home at that time when we were younger..

Re: Football Hooligism
Jim, Don't you think the Irish club you mention, And just about every other boozer we had on both the Dock and Derby road, Have been replaced by the cheap wine stores on every street corner and lets not forget mate you hit the nail on the head the Dockers................ They had got out of bed first and done a days work these louts who are causing mayhem amongst communities and getting there cheap lethal booze and fix don't come alive until about 3 pm after a night on whatever plus what they throw up there nose. And yes Roger as you say these are young men with energy to burn unfortunately 2015 wont be any different because the future for these out of control yobs with further cuts to police and front line services in place its not looking good Regards all Terry.

Re: Football Hooligism
Jim #14, you have avalid poiont there about the longer hours. Here in Melbourne in the days of 6 o'clock swill there were many instances of drunkeness problems.
But now the problem, as explaind to me by the local police seargent, is ther younger ones who either stock up befoe going out, or mix drink and drugs. He informed me that even some prescription medication can cause problems if alcohol is taken with them.
There is no easy answer to the problem, all we can hope is thsat in time enough will be educated to fully comprehend the problem and address it accordingly.

Re: Football Hooligism
Terry in a little place where we live Seaforth seven pubs have gone as we knew it.All of these pubs had their regulars and were well patronised now I'm afraid the great British pub has had it's day.I counted from Seaforth to the Pier Head top road and dock road 26 pubs gone,ok the docks and the seaman have gone but it's still a lot of pubs closed down boarded up,demolished.I notice when I go for my daily paper on recycle day lots of cans and bottles in the recycle box so the younger generation have a different outlook on life, they are not interested in having a local many of them don't even know their next door neighbours.

Re: Football Hooligism
My lad , the Doc, says in Portsmouth, the young girls 15/16 drink a bottle of Vodka before going out at night. then drink the same crap in clubs, before falling over spewing up. last year he had two young 16 year old girls who died, they could not have a liver transplant as all the other support organs had also been destroyed.
When will they ever learn.
Brian.

Re: Football Hooligism
My brother John (RIP) ran kids football as a manager from his local pub for 40 years, 10 year olds to 14 year olds and was always given the best respect from the kids.At his funeral 2 weeks ago the church was full to capacity of young men some in their 50's that had played football for him when they were kids. One young man got up on the altar,he was about 50 years of age,and what an accolade he gave to my brother John.A good story for about 20 minutes which finished up with 2 minutes of clapping, which you don't often get in church. But I must admit as Chris said present day I have gone to support my grandson and the kids do mimic the pro footballers and give all kinds of cheek "you need to go to Specksavers ref"etc.and the parents are something else, how referees turnout for kids football for the couple of bob they get to referee a match I don't know.
Regards.
