Wish I was going with Ivan to Cuba that would be a place to celebrate especially now that certain restrictions will be coming off since the signing of the love letters with the states. Cheers JS
    Went to Cuba last Christmas.
Glad I did it before the Yanks get there.

Denis hope Ivan doesn't bump in to Al Capones grandson looking for his inheritance. What were they charging for a bottle of rum last year. Cheers JS

My first 11 month trip to sea was on a tanker so apart from a trip to the mission in Mina al Ahmadi never got a run ashore that required more than jeans and a shirt.
2nd trip was a little Beaver boat out of London in the swinging60's and I decided to treat myself to some new threads to bring my wardrobe into date.
Went up to Carnaby Street where al those swinging 60's boutiques were. located and it was heaving with outlandishly dressed hippies etc. One female boutique actually had a live nude model in its window. Having never experienced anything similar having been brought up in the Lake District as a real country bumpkin it was all fascinating and new to me. I eventually plucked up courage to enter one of these boutiques w here a very camp male assistant insisted on measuring me and fitting me out with a set very wide flared hipster loons along with psychedelic flowered shirt. Thought I was the bees knees with this new clobber but wearing it for the first time in the bar on the ship I was told in no uncertain terms to get out and get dressed properly by the Captain as I looked like I had been doused in paint of every shade imaginable. Even going to the Station Bar and the New Gog pub dressed in my new finery, drew rather rude and derogatory comments. The gear that they were flogging in those Carnaby Street shops were so shoddily manufactured that most of my new outfit literally fell apart after been worn a few times so next foray into clothing was the Army and Navy store and Millets for decent pairs of jeans and T's.

    I met Fidel Castro once.
We had just taken the Good Hope Castle to scrap in Hong Kong. all hands were waiting in Kai Tak Airport for an old Dakota to fly us home. the airport in June 1959 was just a shed on a finger pier.
Only two planes landed all day. very busy .
The Captain, Mate and Chief Engineer were in the bar, we asked for a sub,
No Chance said the Captain, you will all disappear down town, and miss the plane. We were there for 24 hours,
Then the second plane of the day landed and into the shed walked Fidel with three other guys, all wearing battle dress and beards. He was on his way to Peking to meet Chairman Mao after winning the Revolution.
We shouted , Hey Fidel, you are our Hero, buys us a drink.
He looked at us with contempt, and just said , `Vamoose,` or words to that effect.
So we went off him, the bum.
So Ivan, if you get to see him, tell him I never forgot that insult and one day.................

We were at an all inclusive hotel, so didn't have to buy anything.
Was given a bottle to take home from the barman.Must have been a good customer.
Think rum was almost as cheap as bottled water.
Any one going to an all inclusive, give me a shout.
    I have some good advice.

John. On my first trip to New York, an old hand told me.
If you want cheap gear,go down to the Sally Ann.
The jackets may have the odd bullet hole or tire mark, but other than that good for the price.
Was never sure if he was having me on!
