No John you are getting confused. Del Monicos with brandy squares was in Cape Town.
The Criterion run by a Scotsman by the name of Jock was in Durban. It was in the old berth before they moved to the new one up nearer the town centre. As you came off the ship you had to walk through the atrium of the hotel to get to the street, one side of the hotel was the accomodation and restaurant, the other was the bar. Onlt place in SA I ever found draught beer. All the other bars it was eithter Lion or Castle bottled beer which you could have chilled or 'off the shelf' which meant warm beer.

As I was a galley boy on the Royston Grange, I had full use of the fridges and many a time had tins of baccy hidden in the frozen food.
On one occasion the baker and I made holes in loaves of bread hid the baccy inside and sealed it and left them as if they had just
come out of the oven.
Both of these were successful.
Re: Cant remember this being done!!!!!!!!!!!!
hi Terry, On the Rinaldo,Ellerman/Wilsons, in the after starboard side cabin, someone had carefully drawn round the water jug/book shelf attached to the outboard bulkhead. The shelf was then removed and the marked out shape was carefully cut out inside the outline this piece of wood was then tacked to the back of the shelf. Between the exposed ribs, a piece of 2"X2" had been wedged with 2 or 3 hooks screwed into it. You put your swag into a pillow case and hung it from one of the hooks then re attached the shelf to the bulkhead. I did 3 trips on the Rrinaldow and as far as I know the stash was never found. Alan V P.S.as someone has already said drugs were not thought of in those days!
