Re: Body in the water tank
The poor guy that got bolted in the fresh water tank could have passed out and maybe even died before it was bolted up, through lack of oxygen. Just because it was a fresh water tank does not mean its atmosphere cannot be oxygen deficient and this oxygen deficiency can have been made worse if rust was present in the tank. There have been numerous cases of sailors passing out and even dying, in ships ballast tanks by failing to ventilate the tank and checking its oxygen levels, thinking that the tank has been filled and emptied many times with only water, the atmosphere must be o.k. That is why for any tank entry of whatever kind there should always be a watchman at the entrance checking in and out all personnel.

Re: Body in the water tank
When you enter a confined space
just remember, its not a race,
Stop, and take two,
and take your ELSA set with you
......
a man on top and a line below
to make sure that its safe to go.

. That is from a Safety Poem I wrote while in ESSO, there is more but have forgotten over the years.
There was a case a few years ago when a man went down into a cargo hold and collapsed another followed and another they all collapsed then the Mate and Master went down and all collapsed and died, just one man left on the Bridge. he gave out a mayday and a Royal Navy ship attended. and took the man off, he was going demented. I think it was in the Bay of Biscay.
Anyone hear of that.
Another happened in Swansea where everyone followed down to attend the man who had collapsed, and I think about four men died.
As John says Oxygen deficiency caused by Rust as well as other causes.
Cheers
Brian.
