England my England
Goodbye to my England, So long my old friend
Your days are numbered, being brought to an end
To be Scottish, Irish or Welsh that's fine
But don't say you're English, that's way out of line. The French and the Germans may call themselves suchSo may Norwegians, the Swedes and the DutchYou can say you're Italian or maybe a DaneBut don't say you're English ever again. At Broadcasting House the word is taboo
In Brussels it's scrapped, in Parliament too
Even schools are affected. Staff do as they're toldThey must not teach children about England of old.Writers like Shakespeare, Milton and ShawThe pupils don't learn about them anymoreHow about Agincourt, Hastings, and Mons? When England lost hosts of her very brave sons.
We are not Europeans, how can we be?Europe is miles away, over the seaWe're the English from England, let's all be proudStand up and be counted - Shout it out loud!Let's tell our Government, and Brussels tooWe're proud of our heritage and the Red, White and BlueFly the flag of Saint George or the Union JackLet the world know -WE WANT OUR ENGLAND BACK !!!!

I've always wondered how Englishmen feel, when after singing "Rule Britannia" at the top of their voices, they find out the lyrics were written by a Scotsman.

Hi Richard,
I noticed the other night on the eurovision Song Contest, that there were 37 countries.
Everyone, 36 countries, spoke in English when Voting , EXCEPT the froggy french woman, she spoke in french.
This was commented upon by many others on TV. very few people on TV could understand what she said.
Why do the frogs have to be so bleddy ignorant.?.
Cheers

We were always taught that in primary school so just maybe the fact that "Rule Britannia" is one of the most widely sung anthems is an indication of no matter whether you call yourself Scots, English, Welsh or Irish, this anthem signifies that we are all one nation under one Monarch.

Thomson was a Scottish poet and playwright, who spent most of his adult life in England and hoped to make his fortune at Court. He had an interest in helping foster a British identity, including and transcending the older English, Irish, Welsh and Scottish identities.
For 'Britannia' read Britain, which does, of course apply (for the present) to Scotland, so therefore the chap who penned the words to Rule Britannia was singing the praises of all the UK.
