Unmanned ships
There is a big debate going on at present looking into the possibility of unmanned ships with Captains sitting in a shore based control room navigating up to 5 ships at a time. Believe the EU are funding a project about all this. There is a big discussion thread on LINKEDIN about this subject.
There is also another thread on LINKEDIN about legalizing marijuana for medicinal use by seafarers after a number of states in the USA have legalized the drug for medicinal use.
And we thought it was bad enough coping with the alkies, imagine what will happen if they do legalize marijuana at sea, there will be sailors wandering round with flowers in their hair, wearing tie dyed tees and sandals going "hey man, peace and brotherhood" and smokos will consist of the crew sitting round meditating on the colour of the ocean whilst strumming on the guitar.

Steady on John, the UCL guys are having wet dreams at the very thought of it!

I had the misfortune to sail on a tanker where not only a few of the catering crew , but a couple of engineers smoked wed , on a recycling air conditioned ship the smell , which I detest , permeated everywhere , I don't think an engineer maneuvering whilst high as a kite is a great way to get between the buoys . We get more and more liberal by the day , and I have not seen any advantages to liberalisation yet

had some big west indians working in my factory ....when i was stressed i just walked into the bogs and just went down 5 notches due to the smell in there.......i gave them no quarter but could not stop them no matter what i detest drugs of that type ....mind on the other hand where would most on the site be without our daily medication

haven't a clue what a mcgregor is. my first ship had a bloody great steel lid which lowered onto the hatch. this thread has made me very tired. i'm glad i was a steward.

I might be ex U-C Line John , but I do know you tie up to a Buoy , I believe there was a habit in first class amongst the wingers to do similar , but that was the alternate spelling

#54 Ref first part John. Hope they breathalize these masters before letting them loose with 5 ships each in a room shoreside. Would probably finish up playing dodgems. What happens in the world when there is no such thing as jobs. How and where does money if it still exists come from. If theory does become fact the world will not exist as we know it. If there are no riches and no poverty who picks up the bill, must have to pay the accounts somewhere. Maybe the flower power people were right all those years ago, all we want is love brother. I don't think manouvering whilst high as a kite is a great way to get between the buoys .

Rob you should know as well as me that some would do anything to get amongst the boys on UCL.
