Re: What was the worst cargo you ever carried?
Sailed from Houston, For a full cargo of brown rice ,Open stow from Brownsville further up the Mississippi Always remember the journey home the mate the Bosun the chippie and the crew were asked to watch for any movement on the McGregor lids water and rice a recipe for disaster. The Mate and the Bosun would regularly pull a hatch lid back and keep an eye on her cargo. Afterwards the Chippie would reseal the hatch lid very iffy indeed Regards lads Terry. Can also remember receiving my veterans badge for supplying British armed forces Suez crisis, I had no idea I was entitled to it until notified about 3yrs ago from Market Rasen, Then again when did we ever get to see the manifest ? Re: What was the worst cargo you ever carried?
chemicals on the Shell tanker Asprella. Usually three types can't quite remember them now. The fumes coming off for the whole trip + smells was so bad it affected your breathing. Worse was when you had to clean the tanks after the Butterworth system had washed down. Swear to God that was seriously injurious to your health as no breathing systems provided. When you put your shovel into the sludge you almost passed out & you were down there all day except smocko & lunch.
Never were told the results of the blood tests before you joined or those taken during the trip.
Coal, what a cargo to clean afterwards. Worse it got all through the accommodation vent system so dust coming out for a long time afterwards. Why always after such a cargo did you get grain, sugar or some such, perplexing? Ours was not to reason why.
