Best Times..... Arriving Yokohama/Kobe/Osaka/Moji/Nagoya/Onahama/Tokyo/and all the other ports. The Ch. Stwd. coming round with the sub list. The worst time... having your subs stopped as no money in ship, as spent in last port 2 month ago. John Sabourn
HI All.
My time was 49 to 64, and I don't know about pirates and treasure but my first trip down around the Caribbean at nearly 16 had my fertile mind working overtime, looking over the side for old Spanish galleon's and wandering the beaches looking for buried treasure. Bring it on again I say.

Des wish I could still do the limbo dancing of those days. Bet Ivan can still do. Cheers John Sabourn
Like many more my time was in the 60's, but the 60's ashore or at sea where in the opinion of many the best years ever.
Today I would go back as steward on the cruise ships, conditions there for catering are not so different to all those years ago. Accomodation is far better as are wages, and as a winger they now have it a lot easier than we did.
yes like so many say the 60's were the best & I was lucky though birth timing to enjoy that period the twilight of the BMN. Wish I had got a trip up the Amazon though.
Louis Amigo p8, yes we do only get the "one bite at the cherry" sadly so many forget that & slip in to older age with many regrets. Me well I as the song goes "Regrets I have a few" but very few must say.
As to working a sailing ship, not for this little wood duck. I saw a small one in Valparaiso it was Scandinavian, the owner said as I admired her from the dock then from the deck, "your a nice fine young bucko come with us to the Galapagos & beyond why don't you?" I looked up at those yards from the deck as she lay along side nice & calm then thought of a heavy weather night time, me cold, wet scared out of my f'ing wits & knew I was just not capable nor brave enough so declined. Yep have had a regret now & then though reckon my decision was the best one.
The first 10 years were the best for me. Young, fit, tanned, free and single. The world was my lobster.
Plenty of ships, plenty of choice where to go next. You would never let a shipmate down and if you found one down on his luck never leave him without a few quid in his pocket. A good life.
