The Fish Quay area, formerly known as Low Lights, was the origin of today’s North Shields. Development up the banks from the river brought new streets including Dockwray Square and Howard Street which form the basis of the modern town centre.
There was virtually no building on the bank top until Dockwray Square was laid out in 1763, complete with a communal garden for the residents. The south side was left open to afford views of river traffic to the ship owners and master mariners who lived there. Built in 1806 by the Duke of Northumberland, the New Quay was the town’s first deep-water quay. It provided an open area for a market, fairs and an inn, the Northumberland Arms known to sailors worldwide as ‘The Jungle’.
The Sailor’s Home was added in 1851, supported by the Duke and £3,000 donated by the public. The Porthole public house was the first pub in the district with the ‘long bar’ system. It was rebuilt in 1897. The ha’penny dodger and penny ferries plied from the New Quay to South Shields and the New Cut (now Borough Road) was created in the 1840s as a route for passengers between the ferry and the railway. The line arrived in Shields in 1839 and has since been adapted for the Metro network.

It has been a block of apartments since 1986 , I put a modern photo up earlier , if not in North Shields before 1985 you would not recognise the old pub .
Thanks, only been going to Wallsend since 2001, love the Quays and have learned much prior to my next visit.

Of course not there was no where to sit all the stools had gone on the fire.
There was also a very infamous pub in Leith known worldwide to sailors as the Jungle (Kings Wark). It is still there and is now a trendy bar serving good food.
It is the only pub in Leith and I have now lived here for over 50 years, that I have ever been asked to leave, I was not barred just had to remove myself from the premises. I was innocent, in the 70's many bars in Leith had Go Go girls, a posh name for strippers. One evening whilst on a works night out, I was standing on the edge of the audience watching this female gyrate, when she grabbed my spectacles, and stuck them down her knickers, then suggested I remove them with my teeth. I of course refused and demanded my specs back she danced away, when she next got withing my reach, I made a grab..........got my specs back and a handful of hair, the dancer screamed blue murder, and the rest is history. sighs the good old days
Almost in tears reading these posts and recalling my drinking days.
My best mate got married to his Aussie girlfriend and the reception was held at the REX
The Victoria was where he had to take a job for a couple of months as a dishwasher whilst waiting to re-sit his 2nd Mates.
The Chi-used to drink there with my brother in law
The Mechanics (its still there), her indoors Aunt was barmaid there years ago, used to drink there when it was all painted pink and had a portrait of the landlord in all his finery painted on the bulkhead, he was a "friend" of Richard a well known and respected gay landlord from Gateshead.
Anyone remember the Upper and Lower Dolphin in North Shields?
