Sam McCluskie (11 August 1932–15 September 1995) was a British Labour Party politician and trade unionist. He came from Leith in Edinburgh. He followed Albert Booth as Treasurer of the Labour Party from 1984 to 1992. He was general secretary of the National Union of Seamen from 1986 up to the merger which formed the RMT in 1990. He held a post in that union but retired in 1991.
In 1988, McCluskie recorded a fundraising single with John Prescott.
Len McCluskey was born in Liverpool and went to the Cardinal Godfrey School in Anfield. After leaving school as a teenager, he went to work for the Mersey Docks and Harbour Company and remained there for the next 11 years.McCluskey first became a trade unionist in 1968, whilst working on the docks.[5][6] He became a shop steward aged 19, and was a campaign organiser for the TGWU in Merseyside throughout the 1980s after becoming an officer of the union in 1979.[7][5] He supported Militant during the 1980s, but was not a member.[3] He has also been a member of the Labour Party since 1970.He was elected as the National Secretary for the TGWU General Workers Group in 1990, and moved to London to work in the union headquarters.[5][3] He later became the TGWU's national organiser for the service industries in 2004.[5] In 2007, he was appointed as the Assistant General Secretary for Industrial Strategy for the newly merged Unite the Union.[5] He defines himself as being on the left of the union, and has been given the label "Red Len" in the press because of his involvement in Unite's dispute with British Airways. In 2010, McCluskey stood for election as General Secretary of Unite to replace joint-General Secretaries Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley who had announced their retirement. On 21 November 2010, it was announced that McCluskey had won the election.[5] Derek Simpson subsequently retired in December 2010, and Tony Woodley followed shortly afterwards, leaving McCluskey to take office as the General Secretary on 1 January 2011.[7] In 2013, McCluskey announced that he would be running for re-election as General Secretary. He was re-elected in 2013 with the following results posted. The full election results are as follows:
Len McCluskey: 144,570 votes.
Jerry Hicks: 79,819 votes.
Number of ballot papers found to be invalid: 1,412.
Total number of valid votes cast: 224,389.
Turnout: 15.2 per cent.
In 2013, McCluskey co-signed a letter which was published in the Guardian newspaper which officially marked his support for the People's Assembly movement. He also gave a speech at the closing plenary of the People's Assembly Conference, held at Westminster Central Hall on 22 June 2013.
Like all union boses when it comes to it they will fold. Then tell the workers they have won a wonderful deal for them, a deal they no doubt could have done better on without 'help' from the union.
Then if the company goes bust tell the workers they have foughta wonderful fight and the union will continue to fight for them, not witstanding that the business may well have closed because of union intolerance.
OH BOY am i pleased that i live in the Land of the Long White cloud But i think there is a very big change coming ???
You are right there Lou, the world is a much smaller place than 50 years ago, and changes very quickly. But i do envy you in that lovely part of the world, love NZ, KT
John, hey ho here we have yet another example of unions being bloody minded in times of difficulty. Why they feel super should be non contributory when they are paid way over the odds (or not) is anyone's guess, maybe that word greed comes into it along with old 60-70's union thinking? We just in last month employed two 'mature' people in UK paid them acceptably telling them it was for UK a start up but established in France & Asia. Told them we would give share of profits after 1st year. I was disappointed in standard of applicants along with some of their attitudes almost abrasive. Took on a cockney 60 years of age with quite some management marketing experience & a Geordie of 56 for the Nth similar back ground. Both been out of work for more than five years what a waste of experience & resources for the UK!
No I do not agree with minimum wage concept there must be an incentive for employees but first they must have the will to work & that seems lacking in those we spoke with is it their will is gone, don't know we discussed it a lot over dinner it was quite worrying. I believe making a employee work for a wage that hardly keeps him-her above water an abomination almost modern day slavery. People in London are being paid as low as 6.32 per hour. How the f... did they even pay their cost of travel. One lady, an Aus told us she was paid well as a PA at 10.55 per hour? A guy in middle management who worked for a consultant we used for something told me he was paid 20,000 pa for a 50 + hour week & that if he could get out of UK he would.
