Re: Bond and slop chest
JC John no way would I be involved in eating an Albatross, anyway reckon it would be very fishy tasting? You know they mate for life? I guess needs as needs must in such circumstances. I recall as a young middy my first two trips I used to spend a hell of a lot on QS chocolates the tins of them & eat them almost in one sitting too + Coke. Then when I matured a tad on an ale or two. I have never smoked so often at the end of a voyage I would be handing out the packets from cartons of ciggies I bought for those ashore when we got home as often the slop chest ran out & some of the guys would be going crazy.

The only deoderants available in the 50's was
known as carbolic soap and a soap that would
lather in sea water.

Re: Bond and slop chest
The only name that springs to mind was
JUSTMANS, a Dutch tobacco that we used
to mix with Golden Virginia.

JUSTMANS, that was popular with a number of UCl stewards I am told.

Re: Bond and slop chest
Used to mix Justmans with Capstan tobacco. Some used to mix with pipe tobacco for cig. rolling. Used to burn my tongue mixing with pipe tobacco. I must have started smoking about the age of 8 or 9 having a go on my grand.fathers clay pipes. At 16 was a well established smoker and used to get through the 50 packets of Export woodbines at the rate of knots. Stopped after quite a few failed attempts at the age of 46, not through scare tactics, simply that I could not afford them as was working on ships which did not carry a bond. Have known people who have died with lung cancer who never smoked in their lives. They say it is passive smoking, there again go anywhere in the Orient and you will find most people still smoke, would be interesting to know their figures on smoke related deaths. The full name on the tin was `JUSTMANS SHAG TOBACCO`.
I have lost two friends recently with Lung Cancer, caused by smoking. My ex wife recently died due to emphysemia and fibrosis due to smoking. she was on Oxygen and in a wheel chair for the last two years.
So I guess that smoking is not too good for the lungs.
Cheers

Re: Bond and slop chest
re smoking, i stopped about 4 or 5 months ago, am 74, smoked since i was 14. gave up of my own accord. then found out i had TB, Recently aquired after getting Pneumonia, so just as well i gave up. in Hospital my entire Body was Scanned and Exrayed, every day another Scan, next day would get the results, allways all clear, last Scan was Lungs and Heart, i thought i bet they find a problem, again negative, was traumatic awaiting the results, but Smoking did not affect me, also worked 22 years in oil fume filled Engine Rooms, not a healthy place to work, had to breathe the fumes of many dangerous Chemicals used in Engine de greasing and cleaning. i have allways thought it was the Additives in in our food that caused Cancer, not natural to eat so much artificial colouring and taste.

Re: Bond and slop chest
I too Tony had a full body scan recently as had violent stomach pains. Wasn't so worried about the lungs as had all sorts of checks before allowed into Australia as an immigrant. Did have shadows on lungs which most people of our era had with being in contact with people with TB in our youth, when it was quite prevalent. I was more concerned about my liver and kidneys as have done my share of hard drinking and carousing over the years, However this too proved negative much to my surprise. However it was put down to diverticulitus. A few months previous to this I had a growth on my voice pipe this was removed by surgery in and out the same day. Was sure this must be the big C, however was as far as I know ok as received no reports on such as being cancerous. I have never been a one for running and jogging and keep fit exercises had enough exercise during my working life. I am 77 in a couple of months time and have seen all sorts of these keep fit fanatics go before their time. Keep well. Regards John Sabourn
