Crew linen issue.

In regards linen & cabin keys, my memory must be bad I recall no linen or cabin keys having to be handed in on pay off, in fact do not ever recall having a cabin key even on the couple of maiden voyages I did? Do not remember ever locking my cabin door almost always 'on the hook' Wonder what we did when where the fuzzy wozzy's or Dinky Die etc wharfies were?

I can never remember not having a cabin key, some of the ports we visited we would have lost all. Even toilets were locked in port, but i cannot recall if we had individual keys for the crew toilets KT

Could always use the thunderbox on the stern Keith. Wonder what the Clean Water Act would make of the same situation nowadays. Would have a job catching and proving who did what with about 200 Asiatics at a time. Cheers John Sabourn.

I can remember on a trip to Pakistan and India while at anchor, having to put stages over the side for the shore crew as a latrine, even down to a line and a bucket for the water to wash themselves. When we went to haul the anchor, they had even had a dump down the spurling pipe, not a nice job, even with a hose jet. Locking crew toilets was an absolute neccessity . KT

As said what do they do now, or does the pollution act only apply to certain countries. I was under the impression with fairly recent legislation that all sewage had to be treated, maybe I am wrong. Cheers John Sabourn

Getting back to the question of keys never heard in my day the only key that i heard of was the key to the fog locker as i found to my dismay and as regards to bed linen i have seen some of it going over the side to bumboats in Freetown

Yes John Thats was on the Duchess of Bedford we deck boys a cabin right in the middle of the focsle but on the G|castle the deck hands and the firemen all in one focsle deck hands portside firemen starboard side other ships i sail in the quarters was mainly aft

always called the thunderbox over the arsend the west coast ensign if I remember correctly regards cappy

Lou talks of being in the fo'csl on the Duchess Of Bedford when I was on her she was the Empress Of France.The engineers stwds lived in what was known as "Anchor Hotel" the anchor tube ran right through the cabin,in bad weather (which was most of the time on the Western Ocean) the anchor chain would bang against the tube making a hell of a noise.
