Chinese seamen who I sailed with in the 70"s had one flaw, and that was the desertions in the States. I joined one ship in Philadelphia, next day there were 10 missing. They signed an agreement there was no shore leave in America for this reason. Pinkertons were employed as guards at the bow stern and gangway and yet 10 went. !0 replacements were sent from Hong Kong 5 via San Francisco, 5 via New York, the 5 via New York went to the toilet in the airport and whilst the guard waited outside they did a runner through the window and were never seen again. We lost another 2 in Detroit but a police pursuit car chased and got them back. Two more then got away, whilst clearing out their cabin came actross a document in Chinese, had translated and was from a service in Hong Kong called "The Happy Villagers Association" and was arrangemets with them for work on reaching New York for a year which included accomodation. Many worked for a couple of years made what was big money to them then handed themselves in to the Authorities and shipped back to Hong Kong. Some years after this whilst in Hong Kong a messenger came down to the ship inviting me out for Dinner, from a bosun who had skinned out years before, he was a very rich man and well thought of in Chinese Society. John S PS there was a !0000 dollar bond on every crew member by the US government JS

In 2004, 21 Chinese cock pickers drowned at Morecambe Bay.

Jim ,Did You ever meet or perhaps have heard of Charlie Chin?
He was a ,o A.B. on the Caronia, when I was there. A big cheerful Chap. Great! Liverpool , sense of humour.

Sitting round the Messroom , table, general discussion in progress, after Tea. He looks across at me. Says "Hey Taff! Did you ever Sail out of Barry? I Nodded. Then He continues "They sent me there once during the War I. Gets on Board. .You wouldn't wani to know! it's full of F--ing Chinese" ,flourishing a big Smile.

Same with Spanish seamen in the 70's.
We used to run to Jacksonville and the pig ignorant immigration officer there used to refuse landing permits to at least half of the Spanish crew and when asked why he always replied that he could see that they were going to be "jumpers". On one trip 50% of the Spanish crew who did get granted landing permits jumped ship, so that shows how good a judge he was!!! Best thing was that before we got to Panama we got a message from 3 of them who were already back in Spain. There must have been a Hispanic underground system operating in the same way as the Chinese.

I sailed with Charlie Chin a few times
He was Bosuns Mate on the old Franconia in 1956 and again on the Media and Parthia ihe was the Sailors Mess Man the 50s.
He was a barrel of laughs.
A full China man but more Scouse than anyone.
I heard that he died in the 80s or 90s.
    Cheers
