Many from N Wales sailed on the factory ship under the Norway flag imedietly before and after the War , desperation for a job and poverty rather than choice from what a few still alive tell me.
I only know of one who was on the catchers. My fathers cousin Jack Mathews was on them for some seven years winding up as harpoonist .He spoke Norwegian and I have a picture of him leaning against Shackleton's grave having a smoke. There is a bilingual publication called Maritime Wales which has a few articles about the whalers
Onassis made one of his fortunes from whaling, had a big fleet up until the early 60's I believe? Apparently had his bar stools on the Christina covered in whales scrotum & used to get a big laugh when famous women used to sit on them. I believe whaling was still going on in Aus until quite late maybe 60's at Byron Bay & Ben Boyd NSW also I think in W.A.?
Hi shipmates, Had a few words with an old shipmate on weekend, will write about his time on a whaler, soon as he can his wife, is not well at the moment. I will post it here .
