British Ship Hits the Beach in Spain

Chris like you am probably a bit out of touch. I still think of the old BOT or DTI as the ruling body and as all the ship surveyors, examiners, inspectors etc.were men of some very long practical maritime background were always well respected if not sometimes feared, as most did not mince their words. Nowadays believe all the shipping side comes under HM coastguard. However cannot blame them as they are not responsible for the leglislation re manning. There will be some useless government dept. somewhere with some idiot making such decisions, most likely by the least qualified person they could find. Cheers John Sabourn

Lucky if they had a helmsman. Maybe the cause of grounding, on automatic and went on the blink. Would be interesting to find the actual reason for the grounding, this at the moment reeks of the undermanning practices or at least what a normal person would consider undermanning. No room for absenteeism on such vessels. Looks like the manning with 6 would be master, Mate, ch. and 2nd Eng. 1 AB/Grs. 1 cook. John Sabourn

i do not see how any ship can be safely run with less than 3 qualified Bridge Watchkeepers, same goes for Engine Room, plus 2 AB,/ GP and a Cook. so thats 9 crew.

Tony maybe the bloke whoever he was, thought if the E.R. could be unmanned so could the Bridge. Have been on ships with 1 Engineer with a so called unmanned engine room, a very dangerous practice to my mind. To have 3 Bridge watchkeepers these days would probably never leave the ship. I do hope there will be a report for the general public to see on this one, as if it is due to undermanning maybe something might , and I say might be done. John Sabourn.

In our time at Sea there was no Health and Safety, just common sense, a few quite dodgy jobs, more so on deck. up the Mast especially, but i am sure going to Sea was far safer then, some Ships did not even have Radar, now it seems going to Sea has become quite a life threatening career, modern technology has made it worse it seems, Electronics are not much use if they fail, and you do not have the old ways of navigation as a back up, expect electronic systems are all that many understand.

In the early 90s I was on watch on a Tanker going up the North Sea.
Ahead was a n Everard coaster wobbling around.
I called him on VHF , just curious, He was telling me they had a crew of Four, He was the Mate, no engineers.
He said before he went on watch he had to go down the engine room and clean or change filters and other jobs etc, before he went on the bridge. Just had a Mate , Master and two hands.
