There have been a few over the years amongst those involved in the Piper Alpha disaster in 1988. One was of a person who may of been a person who came to see me on being placed onboard and requesting sea sick tablets. If it was the same person, I was rather sarcastic to, there would have been no such things to my knowledge onboard. I hoped after hearing of this persons suicide that it was not the same person. However whatever one says or does one cannot reverse it. Cheers John Sabourn
the ones that I posted before , on the Emp Of Canada, was a love affair of 2 of the crew one a laundry maid who jumped over the side in the night off the boat deck around north carolina coast , and next trip the guy went over in the same spot ,left some apparel on the deck . :(

I was on a Cunard Liner in 1961, a BR Steward was kicked to death in the forard Pig and the four men carried him up the ladder onto the fore deck and dumped him over the wall. It was after the 1960 strike and the Steward had scabbed.
I was on the wheel on the 4 to 8 in the morning when he was reported missing. There were a lot of talking between the Master, Mate and Chief Steward, They seemed to know what had gone on. I heard the Captain say, `If the passengers find out the crew are killing each other then we will lose them. Log it as Suicide.`I turned the ship about on a resciprical course and we went back for a couple of hours just to show we were searching.

I was on the Carinthia in 61 where I was told a BR had gone missing,they put that down to him having scabbed the strike and was taking some stick off the boys.

Yes you are right the Carinthia, he had taken a BRs job and after the strike refused to give it up, it had good dropsis. and several times I used to see him come into the forard Pig and he got battered a few times before by the same characters. Some of those Stewards were big hard cases. I used to call him the Victim, then he really was a victim. I had just come down from the Bridge just after 8pm and into the Pig when he was started on again, this time it was for keeps. He was taken up and thrown over the wall.

I made a note of it at the time and still have the note in my overtime book after over 52 years, it is in front of me now.
All the motions were put into place , a thorough search of the ship and steering a resciprical course to search the sea, Obviously the MAAs were involved in the search. these were usually old retired Policemen.
There were "NO witnesses." I guess a lot of fellas were scared of certain characters.
I left the ship a couple of days later.

It was August 61 when I was on the Carinthia and the case I'm talking about had happened before I joined her.

Hi Jim,
I signed on the Carinthia on 22 August 1961 and paid off on 9th of September. 1961.Just checked my discharge book. I was QM.
This event happened the day before we arrived in Liverpool. I have the note in my overtime book here.
