    Default BAD SHIPS AND DR,s

Why did some Ships gain a bad name for getting a DR ? The Dominion Monarch was one i believe.

    Bad run
    Bad overtime
    Bad conditions
    Too much B....t
    Captain Caine in command
    Captain Bligh is his relief
Both thought DR stood for Dead Reckoning.
Numerous other probables that no doubt will appear Cheers John Sabourn.

Because some Masters believed that was the only way they could gain respect and keep order UCL had some experts at it , Captain Lloyd to name a few . I was taught Respect was best earned , and a logging and a few DRs to my mind was never the way . It smacked of Captain Bligh and even the Royal Navy learned the error of their ways after Spithead .

I remember him well Logger Lloyd and his brother swivel eye.

I believe he held the company record for loggings, DR and afew other unmentionables.

Captain Whitehouse of the Reina del Pacifico was famous for his DRs, the only way to get men to sail on her again to wipe out the DR,
La Murphy, Bosun, `get up and be Logged`, was all he could say.

I believe there was two South African Brothers both made Captain in the UCL passenger fleet , one logged everything in sight , and had a passionate hatred of cockroaches , he was Logger Lloyd , and I his brother had a marked cast in one eye , and that is how he was named Swivel Eye Lloyd . He was obviously able to pass the Board of Trade Eyesight test , but he had eyes that were not necessarily working together . I came across them in passing , but I am sure there are members of the old UCL catering department that have better tales to tell than I , about the donations they made to seamen's charities

Too many cockroaches ( already mentioned)
Chief Steward Buying his second street of houses
    No washing machine onboard
    Restricted shore leave
    No subs
    No air conditioning
    Stewardess was butch
Cabin boy crying every night wants to go home
    Old man on the P..ss
    Mate a wardrobe drinker
Only one AB can splice wire
Over 6 months since ship was fumigated and rats stating to come out looking for fresh water
Isnt any fresh water, Distiller broken
Sailing under sealed orders old man wont tell the 2nd. mate the next port
Writ stuck on mast and ship arrested, ship sails in anycase.
Those were the the days my friend, sung to music of course.
The bad ships are when it all happened at the same time. Cheers John Sabourn

    Default Bad Ships And DR's

How about this for a DR.Sailed Liverpool London and back. Was not logged never went before the captain never even spoke to the man.Signed off only to find I had a DR for conduct. The damage that did to me was unbelievable,I could'nt get a job, home for months, mates were doing trips coming home and I was still hanging around the Pool.I had to join a King boat to clear my book.
    Regards.
