Hi shipmates ,hi Des you are right the rum was stronger in them days!!!!
Shaw Sav. used to dish out a rum ration for five days either side of the line!
Capt. Kong that is an amazing story beyond belief. You really have to wonder why such an idiotic situation could arise as to everything being translated into Welsh? Mother was Welsh not too sure if she spoke the language though as brought up in Harrogate. As you say their loss when your son left. Here the hospitals are very good & all Dr's speak English, doubt they have to translate the paper work back into Mandarin or Cantonese either.
Ivan I have been told this is the case in Spain with all if you will civil service matters, similarly France where all foreign language doc's, i.e. medical-marriage-birth etc have to be translated + you must have copy of the original might even be the original? It is also recommended you bring a party who speaks the language with you. However Italy is apparently the worst as every time you get told one thing the next time you go back with completed application docs etc requested whatever, they say no you also need this n that.
Cockroaches, JC I remember them on one ship beyond belief, not sure which ship. Anyway we had bought those spring loaded pistols that shot rubber sucker arrows & we used to shoot at the roaches with bets on who got the most per day so you left them where splattered with initials beside. Did the Peggy get the tom tits with cleaning off the bulkheads?
Worst cabin experienced was Brasil Star, even had straw pallyases (spelling) & that was the early-mid 60's. Most in a cabin was four when a JOS so I had pure luxuary (: generally single or two. Can not recall who was responsible for cleaning the deck crews heads, showers etc, I believe the showers were fresh water though they were from memory always clean. I wonder if the mattresses were ever de loused, disinfected after a trip though I do not recall ever being attacked by bed bugs or whatever? The differences in accommodation were amazing. For me the Beaver Boats (CPR) were streaks ahead of anything else I served aboard, including food, except a Shell chemical tanker called Asprella which was positively luxurious. The rec room was incredible for its day, right down to a superb short wave radio.
When did Blue Star do away with Straw Mattresses,i was on Newcastle Star in 1960, had real ones.?

When I was on the battleship, SUEVIC, in 1955, we were lucky to get fed, always on our Pound and Pint. A tot of Rum would have been luxury.
SS. Shaw Savill, meant Slow Starvation.

We used to have those Spud Guns, they were good for shooting Jaspers.

Hi shipmates "Spud guns" you were on some class ships? All we had was Flitt and you had to spray them did they like the stuff? they were allways more the next day? Did "Flitt made they breed? and what was it? Captain Kong in Cardiff if you dont understand welsh they can allways use the local urdu most people speak that?
Thanks Louis,
I had said in a previous post.....
In Cardiff hospital my son had to have every word, every report, diagnosis and treatment made out into two languages, English and then into Welsh. Wasting valuable time and more expense.
If a Doctor, Surgeon, Consultant and Nurse can only speak the one language of Welsh then they should not be there,
Which was daft because there are more Somali or URDU speakers in Cardiff than Welsh Only speakers.
Cheers
Brian
