Callao is a mess now Jim, I was there on QM2 4 years ago. No Bars just derelection, everything was covered in mud for some reason, Very few ships if any go there now, then the containers are in and out in a couple of hours, Seamen do not go ashore as we did on PSNC, so everything closed. I think it was the Liverpool Seaman that kept the economy going.
Got a coach trip to Lima, the Callao residents throwing stones at the coach.
Lima is not that spectacular A few shops on a Cliff overlooking a beach, We just wandered about until it was time to get back on the coach.
    Very depressing.
The whole south American coast EAST and WEST has changed dramatically, all the Bars all gone, The Scandi Bar in Valpo is still going .
    Cheers
    Brian.

My regret was never sailing round the Horn- but on coming ashore in 1952 have had no regrets that I did so!!! Did stay in shipping for the rest of my working life though!! Teb

I am not sure that I particularly crave the idea, other than the sunshine. It appears to me that the world has changed so much that it is nothing like it was when we were at sea. I would rather remember it as it was. I just wish that I had stayed longer at the time although having left at Xmas 79 it appears that I probably got out at about the right time. However there is no harm in dreaming. 89 countries, 228 ports and 100s of people all help to produce some lovely memories which most will never have. Merchant-Navy.net is my last world cruise and I am now content to see the world through the eyes of others who serve to keep reminding me of a very special period in my life.

    Default Regrets

Jim we should always grab any chance that comes our way if we can to avoid regrets. Here we do everything, even driving a 4X4 to Mongolia a couple of years ago on our own. Everyone said we were NUTS! Lima was & still is a s... hole, was there a year ago, agree with Capt. Kong about Callao too, shame. On saying that taking the opportunity way back in the early 70's to go up to both Machu Picchu & Bolivia before former was inundated with tourists on old switch back railway, cross Lake Titicaca on an old Scottish built ferry something not to be forgotten. These done whilst I worked in Peru at Ilo after my sea time. No one else on the job could be bothered, bet they regret it now!

My only regret is I did not get to spend more time in Alaska, beyond beautiful just spell binding every moment only Magellan Straits & New Mexico along with Northern Territory in Aus come up to it & I hate the cold.

Reckon we should all be grateful for the wonderful experiences & places we got to whilst at sea + the friendships we forged even if now days long ago. I am lucky to still enjoying new experiences now & have a fruit loop of a wife who comes along.
