John on subject of beautiful leather & suede jackets from B.A. which were cheap reminds me of an incident in Yacko's bar Valparaiso. I bought a superb deep green 'unborn calf suede coat' it was about 2/3 to my knees. I tell you the Who had now't on me, a real Beau Brumel wearing that with my white Levies & Chelsea boots I thought! Anyway whilst in charming Valparaiso for two or so weeks we frequented amongst other fine establishments 'Yacko's' bar. Often for days (another story as to loggings that were incurred) anyway the establishment had a saw dust covered floor in the toilets which I at some stage visited, however was probably on iron mike when I did on this occasion as I passed out apparently there on the floor ): When I awoke sometime later I got up dusted myself off as one does....& returned to the table where some hold outs were still imbibing much to their mirth. On asking "what the hell was so funny?" They suggested I " take of my prized coat & have a look"...well the whole back of same was covered in p... & saw dust stained foot prints as the p..... had just walked over me to the dunny, done their business then walked over me out again. End of my beautiful suede coat. I still think of it as it was a stunner too.
Another memory is of waking up after passing out at the table with the table all cleared & cleaned up, no one there & noticing as I began to focus that where my wrist watch was normally there was a lettuce leaf tied beautifully. A Chilean girl must have had a sense of humour after cleaning me up as i still had my wallet? Another bar there we used to get harassed by the ubiquitous shoe shine guys. On this occasion we were wearing flip flops & get this, poncho's, truly looking the part of a local (: Anyway after much harassment from this young shoe shine boy & not being of sober mind we said f... it go on then! So he did, putting our feet up on his box polishing away & we had a pair of black boots boot polished on much to the amusement of other patrons. Looked seriously good to.
A couple of us used to live in this brothel with our bar girl friends if we could not make it back to the ship. JC I have some seriously hysterical memories of that time. Ah those memories of a great coast, delightful people, great meat & the ladies were pretty good too.
John great memory of B.A. brought a smile to my face, though no matter what authorities might have said, paliases (straw mattresses) were still on the BS B.A. Flyers in the early mid 60's. I know as I experienced them, along with the worst food of any ship I served on. Richard
I must be going senile, it was rosario where the vigilantes got taffy out of one of the bars, cristobell is in panama, but argentina was bueno .
Remember the BA vigilantes from a visit in 1951 on St Helena an old Sam boat. Had been ashore with lads and decided Id had enough and was staggering back when stopped by two who were going to take me in when they noticed my wristwatch, not an expensive one as it was my first ever watch, anyway they said watch or calaboose. and I!d heard all the horror stories about that so gave them it and was allowed to stagger back.
