First cruise ship leaves today however Southampton are still kicking up and are going to Brussel,s to see the European Commission with a view to putting the blocks on Liverpool.I believe that there was an article in the LLoyds List the other day stating that what Liverpool are doing is illegal!!! I wonder did Southampton put them onto this. The cruise business is growing all the time, there should be enough for all ports,Southampton dont mind Liverpool having the facility but we come back to the old moan from them "It's not a level playing field" Incidently both Southampton and Newcastle have had European money spent on them in connection to their respective cruise terminals.Whats that story about people who live in glass houses.

    Default Cruise Terminals

Tilbury riverside cruise terminal was used by the Polish passenger ships that used to run regulalry to Montreal, the Stephan Batory if my memory serves me right. We used to have drinkies with the crew in Montreal sometimes. That is until one of our container ships (CP Discoverer if I rememeber rightly) suffered an engine failure just after leaving Tilbury Container berths (engineer changing over fro diesel to H.O. forget to open the valves in the correct order, result, no motion lotion to the main engine, no engine) and went headlong into it. CP had to pay a tidy sum of money to the Poles as they could not use the terminal for around a year. I do believe it has been used recently as a cruise terminal again but the last time i passed it in 2008 it was looking a bit shabby.
Regarding Newcastle cruise terminal, no European money is involved in it. The Port of Tyne merely upgraded the quayage and the esisting North Sea ferry terminal to cope with the new Cruise business.

John, just like Southampton I am not talking about money spent directly on the terminal i am talking of monies spent on the infrastructure which all helps to make a better port. Both cities have had European money spent on them.

Jim,you are right about Southampton, they don't Liverpool to have a share of cruise liners. We are more packed with more shipping history than them. The Titanic sailed from there but it was registered in Liverpool.During the second world war nearly all the troop ships sailed from Liverpool. We had more Merchant Seaman, and a bigger port and they were always first back to work in any strikes Seaman,or Docks.By the way ask them why Portsmouth don't like them.P.S. My eldest Son married and has lived in Southampton for years. The people are very good,so the top people should give Liverpool the share of the Cruise Liners we deserve it.Ken.

    Hi John
are you saying it wasn't a High Class Cruise Terminal in the '60s ?
I was there on the Oronsay & Orcades about that time.
I mean it had a British Rail Bar, British Rail Sandwiches, and British Rail Porters what more could a visitor or indeed a Cruise passenger want ?
