All the pubs and clubs that have long gone mentioned in these posts . The Caradoc..........And the Winifred { Know known as the Gateway} Still both there m8 i live a stones throw away from both of them. Up until 6 months ago the owner of the Caradoc Terry Riley,,, Put up a notice in the lounge area { THIS IS A DESIGNATED SMOKING AREA IF YOU DONT SMOKE DONT ENTER} He argued his case in court putting forward if i stop people smoking in my pub it will close within weeks. I actually thought he had a point there should be smoking and no smoking pubs. Then people can make up there own mind rather than being told you have no other choice. If you went a little further north on the same road the Caradoc is on there was the old Seafoth dog track and two other pubs the Royal Hotel,,,, and The International,,,,, The Royal is now an office block The International is boardered up but is a listed building A really good pint in both them boozer,s ws called Toby Light anyone remember it loverly stuff. Any one remember the Long Bar and Mabels,in Mables with ship mate in the 1957 we were on one of Ellermans and Papayanni ships he was from WOLVERhampton,Jeff Wilkes,he took a writing pad out of his pocket and started writing in it, anyway when he went to the toilet some blokes done him over and took the note book,from him they thought he was working for the Press,had bruised eye but laught it off few days later.From Ken:cool:

Hiya Peter,
You brought back a few memories there when you mentioned the Runcorn Vaults. We used to drink in there when we were on the small Paris boats sailing from Wapping Basin, it was just across the road from the berth. The landlord was called Harry and he had a beautiful daughter who used to be behind the bar sometimes.
The Egret also ran up to Manchester as you know and you could never get a job on her as no one ever left.

Would that be Harry Cropper you mentioned as the landlord of the Runcorn Vaults which would be sometime in the early sixties.

wasn't the Cottage on Great Howard St,? just before turning into Blackstone St---Boundary St, heading for Scottie and the Tunnel.
Kong, The Red Lion, a great little Pub and dont forget the Trawler just down the road. Around the corner in James St, when the Queens opend it had a lower Bar with the walls covered with House Flags,Funnels and Photo's of all local Shipping Lines. All has been altered now. WHY? Over the road the Liverpool Arms is still going strong.:)

The Cottage was set back a bit by the railway bridge which crossed over Gt Howard St. I often wondered where could this railway be going to, it obviously went across the dock road also and onto a dock shed I am infomed.Did railway wagons bring coal here for the coal burning ships.If you remember this is where the Overhead Railway went down to road level,this must've been to accomodate this bridge.It would be interesting to see some old maps of this area.
