SS Benalla, SS Beltana and SS Borda
Thanks Gulliver, Ivan and Tony W for your kind thoughts.
A pleasant surprise to see my son Rick come aboard and respond. Although a Spellchecker might have taken the 'e" out of the Navey typo.
I attach a photo of my Dad - another Richard Q - born 1897 - sitting cross legged on the deck (bottom far right). He sailed on the and 'Beltana' and 'Benalla' between 1913 and 1924. 1914 to 1918 he was in the Royal 9th Lancers serving in France.
He decided to take a last trip to Australia and stay here so he signed on the 'Benalla' in 1924 at a shilling a month as sick bay attendant and married my mother who was his very seasick patient.
A good mate of mine's mother now 90 plus, came out to Oz on the SS 'Borda', the three being, I believe, sister ships.
Richard
(Just tried to add the photo from my PC but I can't work out the new system )
