R 235941 Hi Colin, noticed you served on the Pompey/Isle of Wight ferries, namely the Sandown; I was there as Mate from 1947 to 1953 but some winters I went to Southampton/ Channel Isles service,in 1953 went to the Humber area. What period of time were you there.Am a Pompey lad.

    Hello Arthur,
joined ferries in 1955 as a deck boy. Worked on all 3 paddlers and the diesels. Learned to steer by 'keep her on the Abbey' outward, and on St. Judes returning to Pompey. Can't remember many names, but one is Les Hyde, mate /deckie. Made the mistake of calling him Les when he was relief master. I was in Pompey for a few days last year, and I notice that the 'cage crane' is still on the I.o.W. fery jetty. Surprised it has lasted this long!! Who brok the bow rudder on the Ryde? Less said the better!!
    great to meet you
    Colin

Hi, I expect you are aware that the old Ryde Queen is still here on the Island, at Binfield Marina, now in a very sorry state, laying in the mud, funnel collapsed, very sad sight as i travelled on her a lot in the 5o`s,spent the latter part of her life as a night club. regards keith Tindell
