Hi Jacyn nothing to worry about with your post on mental illness wnen went to sea there were no such thing as a medical examination what we did get it as been explained by the other guys but we did have to take medicinefor malaria and it was not very nice at all but in them in days i think we was all abit looney to go to sea

.Was in Port a week <before finally crossing the bridge< to attend a Dance. Many never even made it past the first two or three .very friendly Locals would visit and perfom .for the Sing-along;s.
Considered the BEST Port in Britain ,by many on the ore carriers.

Reminds me of one of my first jobs ashore. Working for a catering contract company we had a contract at Smiths the instument makers. On occasions some of the maintainance men came in on Saturday. this week the painter dropped dead just after putting on his going home close.
On MOnday the chippy went to tell Cryil Webb the forman what had occured.
His only comment, 'I hope he had clocked off before he passed, hell of a lot of bloody paperwork if he had not'.
What other profession can you think of that worked with ......Iron Mike, Handy Billy, Derrick,Jack Staff, All aboard ship yet you would never have a conversation with them they couldn't answer you? A king spoke i never heard say a word? A galley fiddle that never played a tune yet the galley radio was always playing but never needed tuning in? Running Lights that never moved an inch? A monkey island that never saw a monkey? A port that know one ever tasted? A fathom that considered of six feet yet never walked an inch? A knot that you never made fast? A ceiling and Bulkhead that was never above head height,Holidays that we all went on yet never left the ship? A stage you could sing on which was held together by two Lizards with two eyes that could not see which your life depended on? Every voyage a deck hand would be ordered to conduct an inside turn yet we had no Dance floor? Every ship had coaming but not every seaman had a comb? The only string aboard a ship was on a guitar. Think I figured out about half of the terminology, Terry. I have sailed across the Atlantic on QE2 and I do love the ocean and all bodies of water as far as that goes, so can I be half an honorary seaman???

Sailed with a few ex tanker men and know that if you want to delve into insanity then that would be the place to start as those poor bastards had it hard not having the time ashore that the rest of us used to have. I will stick my neck out here and say that the majority on this site are mostly ex liners. One ex tanker bloke used to paint his toes nails as well as his fingernails with red lead paint. Another one used to report seagulls flying ahead with sea boots on and dive bombing the London bus on the horizon while we where in the middle of the pacific. Another one would sneak around the deck hissing at you so that is about three that I can think of that might fall into the guidlines of what you are after finding out. As I say mostly tanker men would be like this as they would be heading home only to see the orders where to report to lands end for orders and end up doing a complete turn around back to another order of cargo. Probably why there are not many dedicated tanker men still around now as they do not have their ship mates to keep them going which is what one would do if some one was having a bit of down time menatally.

I was a Tankerman for the last several years, I guesss I still do the strangest of things according to the Long Haired One.
I did see many nut cases there, I was not one obviously, or was I ? I dont know, what am I rambling on about, did it really happen, is that the reason no one talks to me anymore or is it them. I wonder. I really do think it is them , they are always talking about me , they are all crazy, crazy I tell you. There is no escape. We are all doomed. Sayonara.
