Doesn't quite help with a date when the equiptment ceased to be installed but my understanding at the time was that Aragon and her two sister ships Arlanza and Amazon had had an element of Government support in return for which they could be operated as armed merchantmen in a time of hostilities. There were other elements to this but thats drifting off topic.
Long afterwards I was told the sensing coils were off the Isle of Sheppey how true this was I don't know.

Yes I remember it very wel,l we had it on my first ship the "SS Georgidore" but the only part of it you could see was in the steering flat I often wonder how effective it was, glad I wasnt at sea during the war years.

Hi all top of the class for Rob Page ,for his excellent essay on DG equipment ,I came ashore in 1958 ,worked as electrical designer /draughsman at Readheads shipyard South Shields responsible for routing the DG coil & liason with the local DG man ,as he was known ,
We were still fitting DG equipment gear in 1960, having to have meetings with ship superintendants,as to location of A large DG junction box.we were still fitting DG to Strick Line vessells in the 1960s.
As to the magnetic effect on the compass the Binnacle, was fitted with two spherical objects (fitted each side of the compass(known effectionaly as KELVIN BALLS ) ie KELVIN HUGHES compass ,these objects were adjustable & set after compass adjustment on sea trials,
The Board of trade rules stated that no electrical equipment giving of an electrical field to be installed within 6ft of the compass

Would I be correct in believing that there were seperate protection zones ie just machinery spaces? Memory is creaking a bit but I have a recollection that we had three zones marked up simply as A,B & C. and I think links within the "it should have been locked" cabinet for setting the current.
what a interesting article about the degaussing i am learning a lot of things that i thought i knew about but just goes to show you that you are never to old to learn
M.V. Markor and sister ship Mahout had the gear fitted.
I switched it on , that had bee problely the first time it was ever on.
One of the test fields for calcul;ating this stuff was off Burntisland in the river forth.

I only remember being on one ship with the gear fitted, the ship was the British Admiral. It was powered up every week as I remember, 1st trip Engineer Cadet at the time.
Only thing I can really remember about it was when on one occasion when powering up it tripped the generators off the board. Some enterprising scrap metal merchant had chopped 30 feet of very nice copper wire off the loops.
