Darkest Hour

Went today to see the Darkest Hour. Was not over impressed by the character assassination in parts given to the title role. The film dwelt nearly all on the period leading up to Dunkirk. Chamberlain and Lord Halifax were displayed as stronger characters than they ever were in real life judging by the results in history. Churchill went on to achieve much more in the war effort that could have been covered in the running time of the film. My personal criticism may not agree with others. The only part that brought back memories was when he went awol on the London Underground. And asked a few people their opinion on to fight or not to fight on. I doubt he ever done so in actuality However it may have been to replace his actual rallying cry which was a symbol of his, on the BBC at the time. Sticking to the facts that the public at the time knew would have made him more authentic. We can all criticise as the movie was made for entertainment and to make money for its makers. My criticism would be the film did not do the man justice. He was a much stronger character than that displayed. It was the first day of showing at our local cinema, there were a bare 50 people in the theatre. Most all were of a similar age who could remember the war years. I hope they were not disallusioned. To some of us John, it wasn't history, we lived it.

I know Ivan, I was born in the middle of it and that day one of his wonderful bombs was dropped on the local railway station.
But there was a bit of levity at one point in the film.
He is talking with the US president attempting to get assistance to get troops off Dunquirk.
No go said the president.
OK said Churchill but what about the planes we bought from you, the ones you loaned us the money to buy?

Anyway found a Free Version online ,so will sit and watch that later!

Vernon I had a 30 dollar voucher given me by someone for hoyts cinemas, for the two of us with the pensioner discount cost 21 dollars, so still have 9 dollars left on the card to use at some future film. Could say I suppose was paid to watch it. No doubt it will go in the running for some self acclaimed acting award the show business people like to award themselves with. The unfortuanate part is the film and others like it, are taken as the Gods honest truth by present and future generations. The scripts are mainly written by people who were not even alive at the time, and the story has been repeated that many times gets distorted with every telling. A good example of this is the Bible and the Titanic. B and T which could be on a more lighter note be Breakfast at Tiffanys, or British Tanker Company. cheers JWS

#18, No worries Doc, just didn't think it was possible to view for free a film that is currently showing in Cinemas.

Next two I would like to see are ''The Post'' Meryl Streep & Tom Hanks and ''Finding your feet'' Timothy Spall & Imelda Staunton
