Went today to see the Darkest Hour. Was not over impressed by the character assassination in parts given to the title role. The film dwelt nearly all on the period leading up to Dunkirk. Chamberlain and Lord Halifax were displayed as stronger characters than they ever were in real life judging by the results in history. Churchill went on to achieve much more in the war effort that could have been covered in the running time of the film. My personal criticism may not agree with others. The only part that brought back memories was when he went awol on the London Underground. And asked a few people their opinion on to fight or not to fight on. I doubt he ever done so in actuality However it may have been to replace his actual rallying cry which was a symbol of his, on the BBC at the time. Sticking to the facts that the public at the time knew would have made him more authentic. We can all criticise as the movie was made for entertainment and to make money for its makers. My criticism would be the film did not do the man justice. He was a much stronger character than that displayed. It was the first day of showing at our local cinema, there were a bare 50 people in the theatre. Most all were of a similar age who could remember the war years. I hope they were not disallusioned. Cheers JWS.
