Jim a good spoof, probably the idea taking from a benevolent branch of Freemasonry in the States and Canada called the Shriners. They are a very wealthy organization and run Hospitals in both Canada and the USA. I have a friend who took me along to one of their do"s and also to a street parade they had to raise money for charity which thousands attended. Like most organisations that some know little about them, they are sometimes used for such spoofs which anyone of them would of joined in with gusto. They do wear Fez"s and arab clothes and also play arab musical instruments. Laurel and Hardy one of them came from the Lake District and there is Laurel and Hardy museum there. Cheers JS

I have the Video of the full film, also a collection of Ollie and Stans films,
They were the best. at the end of the film after sleeping in the attic waiting until the rescue ship docks, they come home , again, and with a ukulele sing, "Honolulu Baby, where did you get those eyes," a classic. Ollie gets battered by his wife and Stan is comforted by his as he tells the truth. Both the wives had seen them on the film marching with the Sons of the Desert.
Cant stop laughing even tho` seen them a hundred times. I even have a small statue, two feet high of them both.

This film of Stan and Ollie is one of the best in the Foreign Legion. for Vernon.
They Join to Forget a lady, every legionnaire also has her photo. about twenty minutes into the film.

Ollie falls in love with innkeeper's daughter Georgette and is devastated when he discovers she is married. He attempts to forget her by enlisting in the Foreign Legion with Stan. The bumbling pair end up getting charged with desertion and sentenced to death by firing squad. They manage to escape and hide in an airplane but Stan accidentally starts it up, forcing the hapless duo to endure a wild ride in the air.

Another one to bring back memories for Vernon.
"I`ll join the Legion" by Joseph Locke. [ I have had a few drinks with Joseph when he used to appear quite frequently at the Grand Theatre in Bolton in the late 50s, we drank next door in the Ye Olde Man and Scythe. one of the oldest pubs in Britain, 1108. My mate Ted and I always seemed to be on leave when he appeared and we got to know him quite well. cheers

Hi Jim
The Tax Man was chasing him and he had to leave the country and go to Southern Ireland.
He was in the Irish Guards and the Palestine Police and then in the RUC before he became a professional singer.
He died in October 1999 age 82. He was very popular in the 50s, My Dad had a large collection of his records, he used to sing to them as he also had a good tenor voice, I may even have some of the records in the garage in a box under the rest of the rubble.
I think they m,ade a film of his life called "Here my Song"
I must try and find it.
