    Default John Leonard Jackson

I have queried my great grandfather before but it's been ages, I didn't persist with the search and I've got side-tracked with another grandfather. Would be so grateful if someone could fill in his career at sea.I did send for info to Southampton (I think) and I just got a one page reply. It had discharge no. 957660, date of birth 1870, place Gleaston in Furness. There was a date stamp 1/11/26 name of ship Kampole (I think) no 137464 London 2839. Written across the top was, deceased 24/12/29, which I did already know. incidentally, the name of the seaman was L R Jackson crossed out and the correct name John Leonard Jackson above it. there were 4 numbers at the side, presumably ships he'd sailed on. 118024, 27/4/22 : 108842, 12/9/22 :119582, 31/12/23 and 137464, 2/1/26.
Hopefully someone will be able to help. Would really like to fill in more of his life. I had been told he'd been torpedoed during WW1 but my informant has proved not to be too accurate with information so I'm really not sure about that.
Any help would be most gratefully received as would any tips as to where else I could find information.
    Thanks, Giacomin

    Hello,
John Leonard Jackson Dis A. 957660 Born 1870 – Gleaston in Furness. Rating: Ships Cook & Stwd. Deceased 24th December 1929.

EATON GROVE official number 118034 – date of engagement - 27/4/1922.
    MANCHESTER IMPORTER official number 108842 – 12/9/1922.
    MANCHESTER MARINER official number 119582 – 31/12/1923.
    KAMBOLE official number 137464 – 2/1/1926.
    KAMBOLE official number 137464 - 1/11/1926.
Personal records for Merchant Seamen during WW1 have not survived therefore the only way to find out what ships he served in during that time would be to back track through Crew Agreements starting from EATON GROVE in 1922. The Crew Agreement for this ship will hopefully provide the seaman’s previous ship and with a little bit of luck you could possibly find all of his sea service that way.
    Regards
    Hugh

Added* - His WW1 medal file can be downloaded for £3.30 GBP - BT 351/1/69051. His DoB is shown as 1872 but I am reasonably sure it will be him. The file won't, however, give you any further information other than his campaign medals.

Thanks so much for this information. I'll see if I have any joy with crew agreements. he was certainly sailing for years before 1922. Why oh why are grandparents so hard to track? But hopefully you've given me somewhere to start. Thanks again
