"Orient Line ships -- the famous 'O Boats' -- weresuperior to the P&O liners. There was almost nocomparison," remembered Howard Franklin. "Ships like the Oronsay(1951) were more formal, even on the UK-Australia run, in first class and farbetter, innovative decor."

He was still alive Cappy, but always brought me down to earth, even when I became Supt.

I can't answer that Bill, at that time I was on passage from Dunkirk to Suez on one of Ropner's at the start of one of their 22 month short trips!

Cappy, polishing port holes on a UCL liner was fraught with danger

Oh Dear ME! I was JOS on the Oronsay in 1964 and I was bridge OS. I remember in Hong Kong crawling out on the end of the main mast yard at night (during the 8-12 watch) to retrieve the halyard end ( flag clip had caught up in the block) that the QM had lost, of course he had his whites on and could not get them dirty. Looking at the picture makes me feel rather sick.

I joined the Oriana on her maiden voyage in October 1960 as a Deck Boy after spending a few months at the Prince of Wales Sea Training College, first overseas port of call Lisbon. Great introduction to the life at sea but left the Oriana and set sail with the Blue Star line. Have to say I enjoyed life on board the Oriana as a young lad of 15 half but discovered the freedom of life on cargo ships. Malcolm Francis
