Sixty years ago, in the winter of 1955-56, you go over to New York's Pier 84, board the beautiful Cristoforo Colombo or her sister, the immortal Andrea Doria, and set sail for Italy -- 9 days via Gibraltar to Naples. Then on to Genoa, Cannes, back to Gibraltar and return to Manhattan. A 3-week roundtrip.
Then little more than a year old, the 29,000-ton Colombo could carry some 1,055 passengers -- 229 in first class, 222 cabin and 604 down in tourist.
For an off-season, winter crossing, you could do first class for 9 days for $360, cabin class for $300 and tourist $250. And remember, prices were a lot different then -- you could do Europe on a bargain, on $5 a day!

I remember in1954 on a Fyffes Banana boat it cost £80 for a 14 day trip to Jamaica.
But I guess at £28 a month wages then, it was a lot of money.
    Cheers
    Brian
