    Orient Line ships

"Orient Line ships -- the famous 'O Boats' -- weresuperior to the P&O liners. There was almost nocomparison," remembered Howard Franklin. "Ships like the Oronsay(1951) were more formal, even on the UK-Australia run, in first class and farbetter, innovative decor."

One from the days when ships looked like ships as we knew them.
Great ones now all gone, never to be seen by the current generation who will never know the glory of such.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

Life is too short to blend in.

Not Orient I know, but just a bit of news, the QE2 has moved (last Sunday) into drydock in Port Rashid (Dubai) to start her conversion to a hotel ship. A new berth has already been prepared in a new marina, the lifeboats have been taken off and form a new road towards the reception area of the hotel, a new gangway is already in-situ and two more are under construction

Hi Doc, "Oronsay" my first ship, sailed from Tilbury 16th March 1963. Deck boy aged 16yrs 16 days old. She was a Buff colour over the side then, our cabins porthole just under the letter "S" on the bow.

My first Passenger liner, had avoided them like the plague, was forced by the pool to join her in Aug 1960, it was a culture shock, I signed on a Utility Steward washing dishes and polishing decks on night shift, by Naples was promoted to Tourist class winger.
Sailed to Sydney by the usual route, then we went on a cruise to Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Manila, then back to Sydney, then home. Discovered ships that had an Itinerary that’s was kept to, a Pig and Whistle, movies on deck, Sods operas on a Sunday, I was hooked.
My next ship was the Orontes, an emigrant carrying vessel, £10:00 stowaways did three trips on her, on her final voyage, we got caught by the Mistral when entering Marseille, big hole in her stern, got back to Tilbury Feb 1962, then joined the Windsor Castle Apr 1962, happy days.

Would anyone have sailed with my wife's uncle. He was Chief Steward/Purser on the Orantes, Oronsay and also the Canberra.
The family called him Bill, why I don't know. He was Leon Ian Walker and a Tilbury lad, Also was ex Welsh Guards.
