To right James, my maths teacher could direct one of them or a lump of chalk without having to look at you and our ex military Latin and R.E teachers swagger stick could wind you without him leaving his seat.

Ours were more hands on, one maths teacher would punch you between the shoulder blades if he caught you walking with hand(s) in your pocket, old maiden lady about 4' 8", twin set and pearls would hold one side of your face in one hand while she slapped you silly with the other.
Elderly French teacher who had half a pound of flour on her face, would fly into a rage and go berserk with the strap, 6' 4" physics teacher, who played county cricket, would take a bowling run up with the belt. Too traumatic a memory to carry on with that sadist headmaster and his penchant for the stick.

Grammar school, run by Christian Brothers/ Jesuits. Nothing Christian about those evil bas-ards.
I played rugby at a decent level for Birkenhead Park and always looked forward to fixture when we played Anselmains. They usual had a few of the Christian brothers in there teams. Settled a few old scores in those games.
