    Default Cortona

Does any one recall the Donaldson ship "CORTONA"? I was on her in 1960 joining her in the dry-dock at Victoria Dock, Royal Group in London and I thought, "My God, what a mess" but I soon found out looks can be deceiving. The entire deck department averaged 21 years of age and she was a great ship running to B.A. / Monte Video / La Plata and we all resigned for another trip. She was a real "chatty but happy" ship.

    Hi Phil.
I was watching a program by Sir Tony Robinson on TV last night, all about the Thames, showed where we used to sail from, now a high rise area, one of my cousins now lives in Canary Wharf, small world.

When on the "CORTONA" I was on the wheel entering Monte Video going through the busy anchorage when our steering gear failed and we were heading straight for a Smiths of Cardiff ship and we hit her dead midships causing a big "v" shape in her and we damaged our bow obviously. This meant we had to spend another few days there while it was repaired - some people have all the luck.
