Donald Murray m.v. SIG RAGNE ........
‘That ship was the Sig Ragne named after the Norwegian owners daughter .I wonder where did she end up as she left Denholm Management shortly after- no wonder ,she must have broken down 50 times that trip -the only words the Chief knew was “all hands below today” .Being GP, there was nothing we could do but moan, but he gave us a bottle of 4 Bells and a case of beer often without asking for it so we could have done worse .’
Well I don’t know what happened to the daughter, (!) but the vessel went on to do a creditable 27 years.
Cargo ship 11,857 grt, completed by Upper Clyde SB, Scotstoun 6/71. for Owners Rederi AB Ragne Västervik Sweden. - But placed under the name Liverpool Liners Ltd ( Denholm Ship Management Ltd Glasgow as managers ) Ship registered Glasgow.
This was to do with a subsidy to foreign shipowners at the time(1969/70 ) that if they ordered from a British shipyard, and placed them under the U.K.flag for 5 ?years by way of a U.K. management company then it would be tax advantageous for that shipowner.
This was to try and help troubled yards like Upper Clyde Shipbuilders(formerly John Brown’s) .I don’t know how the scheme worked out in the end, but the struggling U.C.S. went into liquidation in 72/3, and the other 6 ships (near-sisters to the Sig Ragne-called the Clyde-class-which was an SD 14 ‘economy’ type design) for 2 other owners were completed under liquidation-a sad end for a yard that had launched some of Britain’s finest ships-and which just four years earlier had completed building and fitting out the QE 2.
Incidentally ,all 7 of these Clyde class vessels went on to survive in service for 25-27 years each…..
SIG RAGNE history.

Re: My Ships with Denholms
Hi mike, been a while and Yvonne sends her love.
We sailed on the Lousey together during the mid 70s. To jog your memory we had a little boy with us called Stuart.
We later did a tour on the Loch Lomond.
I was a 4th engineer.
Stuart is now 40 and has a couple of boys of his own.
I will keep an eye out for you bonny lad and hope you get back to us.
Tony

Hi Tony and Yvonne! I've just seen your message today! How are yi both doing? I'm glad to hear 'little Stuart' is doing well,
I was on the loch lomond, arctic troll and troll lake with you both (remember I had to go to hospital in Key West to get my appendix taken out}
A smile comes on my face every time Blondie sings 'Atomic' as it reminds me of us jumping around the crew bar to it all the time!
Happy days eh? Do you still live in Redruth? It was good to hear from you, keep in touch
Mick
