j&j denholm
I sailed on a number of denholm ships and found them less class ridden than most other ships of that time.
I think they were the first to introduce self serve bars (beer) where we marked on a tally sheet how much beer we had consumed.
Very few cheated and the final tally was always much more than the barrels held.
In fact the only cheat I remember was a chief steward who tried to pad my bill for his own reasons but as I am left handed and he was a righty, it was easily proved

Never ever knew a second steward who was honest. They were all looking after number one, bonuses must have been good.
Happy daze John in Oz.

Bar Tabs.
Never ever came across this idea while actually at sea but I served four years on a maintanance boat offshore Nigeria, in the unoficial bar we had a book were we Marked down each beer we had next to our names, if the boat was pushed out by someone whose birthday for example then however many beers were bought then that amount of ticks went next to the name whose celebration it was.
On a couple of occasions while I was on my field break some dishonest person decided to put a few ticks next to my name never did find out who it was but I guess there are a few dishonest people on every job.
Best wishes,
John Aspin (R685343) Ormesby-Middlesbrough.

I did a few months on the Naess Trader Back in 1958/59. Mind you, I was but a mere ordinary seaboot, so that self serve bar stuff didn't apply to us. It was a good ship though, with a good crew, from el capitano on down to the ship's cat; with one exception. The chief engineer. He was 'fae Glasgie', and the most ignorant S.O.B. I've ever had the misfortune to sail with. He had an inborn hate of deckies, and took it out on anyone of that ilk! I put it down to him being that one bad apple in the barrel. He used his 'officer' status to say and do things that he certainly would not get away with today. I guess he was the exception to the rule when Scowegian referred to Denholms as being less class ridden than other companies. I would like to meet him today, but I guess by this time he will be shovelling coal for Old Nick.
See ya guys,
Yorkie

G'day Les, did a few trips as officers steward and I can tell you that ant tales you heard about them are most likely true. Some were great guys, mainly engine room, but some of the deck ones were right up them selves. Sparkies were about the best of all but soem of the junior deck!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Happy daze John in Oz.
