    Cool Denby Grange

Did my first trip on the Denby Grange in 62 as being a bit green to the life sea, I found officers were not all that bad, and as most of the crew were from my home port (BARRY) they were great they sort of looked after me and showed me the ropes, food was very good, very little o/t, and the Sunday inspections were a bit of a nightmare otherwise a pretty good ship.

    Hi Geoff
I am not sure how long the Hornby Grange was laid up, but it was a good few months then she dry-docked. I think that was the one and only time she had been to Barry. Can you remember a chap called i think Ben Denman might have been a Lamp Trimmer?

    hi aj
sorry mate, the name doesn't ring any bells.the lampy, bosun and chippy were all companies men. the bosun was irish, and we got the feeling he was ex RN as he could read and flash Morse code real good.
    best wishes Geoff.

    Hi,
I also live in Barry and sailed on the "Newbury" and "Clutha River" was also on the Flatties for a long spell.
My last trip at sea was on the "Clutha River" we left Barry at 4 a.m Christmas morning it was my only way back after having a DR off the previous ship.I was on thE "Dame Caroline Hasslett" for 18months,the crew were nearly all from Barry it was a great ship. I still miss going to sea, but we only remember he good times not the bad ones.

    Hi Ray
Looks like you finished with the sea, as i was just starting, i also sailed on the Clutha River and the Newbury but not as a merchant seaman, that was much later than when you sailed out on them it was when i worked in the drydock.
Cheers AJ Wales also from Barry

    Morning AJ.
Were you working at Baileys dry dock (Barry) in the late 60s, early 70s ??.
If so do you remember a couple of rather expensive ships condensers being stolen off the dry dock.??
