Craig, I was on the Oregis 57/58,three of us got sent down from Liverpool, pantry boy (me)galley boy and mess boy.The mess boy did one trip (Bone) and got out the galley did maybe 4 trips and got out. As I was 18 I wanted my rating so I stuck it out and became Asst.Stwd.I obviously had to stick it out for a while but it was a good ship and I enjoyed being on her (especialy as I was on big money!!!) As the average trip was about 3 weeks you can imagine I seen people coming and going ,we were back and forward to Port Talbot.I was the only "Scouser" on board so when we docked in Port Talbot everyone disappeared to the Valleys or where ever else they came from.I knocked around Port Talbot and got to know a few people. What I'm coming to is that an Asst.Stwd named Colin did join it and he was from Swansea. He was a smallish squat well built lad .I think he felt sorry for me,when we docked in PT and all hands were going home and I was left on my own.He invited me to Swansea I know we started off in the Seamans Mission but where we went after that or how I got back to the ship I can't remember it was such a long time ago.
hi Jim, Did you prehaps know a family member of mine, his name is David Lindsay Duncan, was on the st Margaret out of Port Talbot. regards Peter Jacobs
Hi Peter', No I'm sorry I dont know the person you were asking about I only sailed on the Oregis out of Port Talbot.I wish you luck with your enquiry.
Hi Dave I was on two of Houlders Iron ore carriers in 1961 the OREDIAN and OREGIS. sailing out of Barrow to the wonderfully scenic part of Norway ,loading in Narvik and returning to Port Talbot. From what I can remember they were good ships ,comfortable accomadation ,and nice short trips . But I did drift back to Shell tankers after that . Regards from Barrie (Jim) Parker AB 1955-1965
