my name is tim i spent all my sea time 1972 to 80 with houlder first ship was faraday january 1972-june 1972 .sorry can not give all the dates as lost my first Discharge book from 1972 to 1974 .hardwicke grange think it was 12-8-72 newhaven when the dockers were on strike also my twin brother tom sailed with me on the hardwicke at the same time and tom fiddler as bosun. westbury joined her in dry dock at falmouth late 72 ports of call outward london,hamburg, rotterdam,amsterdam, antwerp ,london,panama,west coast central America, cargo 4 horses 2 bulls you name it we took it .homeward ports of call same as outward with coffee. sir john hunter joined rotterdam 14-10-74 left 5-2-75 rotterdam .oregis argyll field 1-2-75 left 16-1-77 tyne.banbury 16-2-77 avonmouth -liverpool 21-2-77 run job .oswestry grange 26-2-77 to 11-3 77 run job.hardwicke grange 23-3-77 to 18-5-77 layby berth tilbury. faraday bosun was frank Dobs or Dobson . all the best tim

Had the pleasure of sailing up & down the Ship Canal a couple of times (known in those days the Manchester **** canal)the last time we loaded general cargo for Canada after dropping the pilot in the Mersey Estuary we started full ahead after a short while the lube oil temperature started to rise rapidly so we had to stop, on opening up the lube oil cooler which was the problem it was full of, yes you have guessed it, it was full of used condoms not a pleasnt job to clean it out.

Well all very interesting about which City is Tops in the World!
Its a hard call to say that London is the Number 1 City in the WORLD isnt it?
Now not that i have been to too many large Cities in my time,and although i also must agree that London (The big Smoke) is certainly a great place (also enjoyed it there many times) is there not perhaps other large Cities in this Great expanse of ours that would stand up against London?
There are many great Cities,so to pick one is certainly a hard task!
But listen i know how you feel and i too would pick a place that is nearer to my home haha!
Now what about Cape Town,Sydney,Singapore,New York,Paris,Tokyo,Berlin,Rome and oh so many others??
Oh well just keeping this going! And waiting to be shot down in small pieces! LOL!!:D

Good to see any water way being cleaned up, so much polution from shipping and other industries over the years. But Vernon while I garee thta London is a number one city I must point out that Melbourne has twice been rated as the worlds most liveable city and is currently third in the catergory. For all our Canadian friends I believe Ottawa is alos in the top three.

London in the mid to late 60's, flower power, free love, great music, great shows, Wimpey bars, mini skirts, ban the bomb marches, motor scooters, mods and rockers, in fact just a great place to be.

Hello Dave, I remember Houlders had some ore carriers, I remember one the St. Margaret,and the Orielia, I was one the Cavendish, Clerk Maxwell, Sir Alexander Glen, Cymbeline, all run by Houlders, I joined the Ocean Transport and when I found out the 'run' she was on I was 'made up', we went 'round the land', loading, the second last port before we sailed for Brazil was Hartlepool. I was pestered by the lad in the next cabin to go ashore, we ended up in the 'Bridge' in West Hartlepool, the ladies got us drinking exhibition ale, and cyder mixed, they called it a snakbite. This little excursion resuted in me being given the boot, so I didn't get on the great run that the ocean transport was on. Just another episode in the life of a seaman, I got the Clerk Maxwell that same week,being a gas tanker, there was no senoritas that trip, saved a few bob though, to blow in Canny Shields.
