    Hello Kenneth
As older ships call signs are very difficult to look up on the Net,i would suggest that you contact the Llodys Ships Register which keep all records of these things!
I am sure they will be able to assist you ,just mention that you are doing some research on the Ship!
    Cheers

Did you know in January 1912 Titanic's call sign was M.U.C. Some time after January it was changed to M.G.Y. This was previously assigned to the U.S .Vessel Yale. Terry.

Most British call signs began with G. The only one I can remember was my first ship at sea GRDF. Probably because I spent that much time putting the flags up and down. JS

Terry Suspected that, in the 50, 60, and part of the 70"s however most British ships began with a G, I suppose until they got short of letters then other letters were introduced. Notice the call sign of the Titanic was only 3 letters only, there weren't that many ships fitted with radio in those days. Most countries had their own distinguishing first letter, which I suppose as more and more countries opened up their Merchant Shipping it became not feasible, as there are more than 26 countries in the world. Anyhow might have had the equal rights commission or some other body of hangers on after us. Cheers JS

    John S
Call signs starting with Z are most likely Bermuda register.
The International Radio Regulations headquarters in Geneva, still publish annually a list of all ships call signs in one volume, other volumes list call signs of shore stations etc.
In spite of every thing, it is still a IMO requirement for ships to carry these volumes.

p.s cannot recall the exact name of the organisation that oversees all that stuff.
