Default Uniform Query / Fellow shipmates Lochiel Scotland

Hi, I am hoping someone can help me. I am trying to find a colour picture of the Merchant Navy Chief Engineer uniform from 1950's - 1970's. Sadly my dad passed away from covid, I would love to see a colour picture of his uniform, as I am having a portrait made of him in full dress and only have a black and white image. I would also like to see a close up of his stripes as I have commissioned a black and white painting with spot colour for his hat badge and sleeve stripes. It would be wonderful to hear from any former crew who knew Robert Phillips from the Lochiel. I want make a special memorial and any assistance would be so valued. He wrote a little book about an adventure he had onboard, hoping this link might help identify him to others - Robert G Phillips - Also, a brief introduction to what happened - The Circlip The winter sea around the western islands of Scotland can be unkind. These islands have experienced some of the worst weather ever recorded. This true story is about a small mailboat caught up in a big storm. Lochiel was fighting bravely to stay afloat when, without warning both her engines failed. ... Thank you for reading, if anyone did know my dad and have any photographs of them together, this would make a wonderful gift for my step mum Isabel who has her 90th birthday soon, the first without him in nearly 40 years, the stories will provide something that will mean everything. Thank you again Linda

Well he was by all looks a Chief Engineer ?
Hope that you may get some good replies here as it would be nice to do what you are planning.
Condolences on you loss, stay strong!
    Cheers

It would be something like this but with his Stripes of course, hope this may help a bit.
Trousers would of course just be same Coloue and Material to match.

Thought that but, think line two is engineers.

    Line 2 - 4th from left: Chief Engineer ?

    Added:

Actually, yes, it would seem like shoulder above and cuff lower,
pos Linda may know if he made captain ?

Well if he was a Chief Engineer, he would be rare indeed if he then made Captain, as would have to start again from bottom rung and get 2nd Mates Cert and through more seatime to get 1st mates cert, sacrificing C/E salary and then more sea time before sitting Masters certificate

Bearing in mind #6 and Ivan, wonder if for a photo op,
he may have borrowed his captains jacket ?

Bob Phillips Bob was born in India in 1932. As a young man he settled in Scotland and joined the Merchant Navy as a junior engineer. After eight years as a sea going engineer he worked for the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow. No mention of captain.

That Incident could well have been a way before his actual Finishing with the Merchant Navy Keith ?

#2. I haven’t got my eye drops in yet , but the pictiure looks like a lieutenant commander in the RN. Judging by the cap badge . The design of braid could also be various companies but again is not MN uniform. As to a post re. British MN re being both captain/ master and chief engineer combined , I sailed with a second mate with a mates cert.whose ambition after masters. Was to continue and go for second and first class motor certificates. This was achievable as he was a time served shipwright and ex ships carpenter. I don’t know what the present rules are but In The 60s there was talk about the chief engineer taking on the responsibility’s of the master, I particularly don’t see any reason why not. It has gone on in the RN since the entry of power driven vessels into the naval service. The one with the double barrelled intentions I don’t know how it went , and think he would of been first of his kind if succeeded. The first question I would ask if he was successful would be did he get the wages of both. Cheers JS....
