Still trying to unravel the family story of grandfather being marooned in Murmansk.
Have just found an article on the involvement of USSR in the Spanish Civil War. "USSR and the Spanish Civil War." Soviet support for the Spanish Republic... called Operation X which started in Sept 1936 with ships loaded with tanks, bombers and ammunition setting sail for Spain...Their use of the Black Sea ports and the routes from Odessa and Murmansk. to France { until they signed the treaty with Germany} and Sevastopol.
After reading and consideration am now thinking that Grandfathers unfortunate experiences reflect much of the info in the article.
Grandfather was a staunch supporter of the Seamans Union and Labour issues so it is not surprising he would have been involved in this confrontation.
It is also logical to assume that repatriation would follow the railway route from USSR to Sevastopol and the harsh conditions they encountered were more likely to be as a result of the unrest in Europe and the various partisan groups vying for control.

Maybe a bit closer??? .I would be grateful for any further suggestions.
    Cheers Fran
