#50 everything is sheer bravado when young and to show fear especially if a mixed school and in front of girls was a desperate no no . However if wearing waterproof pants would have to seal them at the ankles as to be seen standing in a pool of water would let the cat out of the bag and life would never be the same again. Thank goodness with age bravado disappeared through the window , and to fear was a life saver many times. Cheers JS

Fouro, the headmaster administering the tawse? seems unduly lenient for Scottish schools; in my school the teachers gave it and if sent to the headmaster, it was the stick (cane). One or two notorious sadistic teachers would punch you (not lightly either) and an elderly maid of an English teacher would hold your head in one hand while she severely slapped your face with the other.

Not commenting further on abuse but,
all that put over they are as nice as pie
are worrying. No evidence needed, life
has given much truth, some can give it
large but young one's if they knew then
had little warning and today please be very
    aware. Many strange people about.

I was at one time in Nazareth House in Cape Town (Orphanage ) for nearly Two Years at the time our Dad left us, and Mum was desolute, hard times but necessary at the time/

As most will know it was Run by the Nuns , and although they were very strict then and did use the Cane on us, i sure as hell can say it did me now harm, not any others. Taught us the correct ways in life and how to be respectful, something i have carried all my life since then.

Too much leniency these days , and thats the reason that so many of the Young are as they are Today! Not all thank goodness but far too many still.

To be strict and to show how to behave is the way to go, no need to go overboard with punishment , but one must show a strength that is both harsh and kind!

Thats my way, i brought my Kids up in that manner and by jove they have turned out just great! Love them all so very much.

Yup I went to an RC school and was taught that JC said 'suffer little children to come unto me' those Nuns and Brothers certainly kept his word! Knew early on that ebony hardwood came from Africa as they kept us frequently in contact with it!

Well John, I have forgotten most things that I learnt at school.
But I bet I can still say the mass in Latin. That was one thing that was beaten into me.
Not any use in the outside world.
