Good luck Mike, even if you have to crawl there, don't cancel. I have just contacted the eye dept here on the Island, i was referred for eye cataract op on the 28th January, i am in the queue which is 24 weeks wait for the first appointment, so thats decided me, i will get it done on private ward, £2300, my saving are for a rainy day, and its now pi**ing down. You can have it done privately on the never never also, kt

    Hi KT
You can choose to go to any hospital you want to, not just your local one.
I do not like my local hospital so I go to Hospitals in Manchester as they are better and have shorter waiting times.
Get your Doctor to recommend Queen Alexandra Hospital in Ports mouth, an excellent hospital , my son is a Consultant there if you ever need a new Liver, and it is only a short ferry ride across.
    Cheers
    Good Luck.

Thats right Brian, my wife is having two new knees at Royal south hants hospital, could have my eyes done there as well, but time i take in ferry fares and taxis it works out about the same as having it done locally. Got to time my eye op in-between each of the wife knee ops, so at least one of us can drive, kt

Had my cataract done last year, it is a bit of a rigmarole, optician sends letter to quack he then refers on to hospital, but got my first consultation with surgeon within about 5 weeks, he came out to a local hospital near me (4 miles away, I was given a choice of about 4), had that one then another at the eye dept. in Newcastle about 4 weeks later, then within a week had an appointment for the op for 6 weeks after that, which was subsequently cancelled the week before because the surgeon fell off his bike and broke his shoulder, but I had a revised appt for a week after the first.
All in it took about 4 months.
Whilst on visits to the eye dept, I was astounded at the huge number of people being seen, some were travelling quite long distances.

It's difficult for me to understand the waiting time you guys have.

I went for my semi-annual eye check, the doctor said it was time to have them done. I saw the surgeon in about three days later, he scheduled me for the operation on the first eye for the following week and the next one in two weeks after the first one. All done within a month from start to go. Eighty % of costs covered Medi-Care, our national seniors medical plan and the remaining 20% by my private insurance.

    Cheers, Rodney

I think Mike hit upon a subject that will affect 90% of us at some time in our lives. Had we been informed 65 years ago that we would ned private insurance , maybe ? we would have listened, it s certainly the way we will be going in the future, as Rod describes, but being totally selfish, i want my bloody eye fixed so i can drive again, and wait for hors for a crappy bus system we have here, lol, lifes not that bad in reality, kt
