    My turn I guess:

I was admitted to hospital yesterday to have my artery checked out (as I understood it) to make sure there was not a blockage to cause a problem to replace my sticky heart valve in August, as I had some heart pain last week.

I was admitted, prepped and moved into the operating theater. I had had a stent put in ten or so years ago and the thought of sticking a tube through my groin and up to my heart scared me to death. It was a piece of cake, I actually watched it being done on a monitor. The thing was done by a single surgeon and two nurses to assist and took about ten minuets.

Through the swing doors on a rolling bed I went to a full blown operating room and five nurses awaiting me. Above the operating table were five monitors this time plus a another two screen set-up with another nurse activating this. I was screened off from a long side table along where I lay.

Two doctors came in. Whoa! wait a minute, what's going on here?

The four nurses came at me like a squad of commandos. Transferred from the cart to the table. One shaving my right wrist one shaving my groin area. One telling me that they use the catheter through the wrist, but prepare the groin if that doesn't work.

Long story short, the procedure took forty minuets and I ended up with a new stent (done through the wrist).

The surgeon had told me they only place stents if the blockage is over 80%. Obviously I qualified.

The surgeon told my wife that the stent should alleviate my discomfort and could delay the valve repair. He will know when he checks me in a month. The valve job will still eventually have to be performed, however, in the meantime—starting Friday— I should continue my daily exercise program and bike ride and behave as normal. So for me that's good news.

Today I'm down in the dumps, both wrists are sore, from the surgery and the other from the IV. and its off to the urologist for a follow-up.

Ain't it fun being an old f#@t? Still the alternate sucks worse.

#12, Des, not sure about that, but at one time would have been over the moon with all the attention from the nurses, now it's a case of get that catheter in and stop the torture, same when they are swabbing the area when prepping you for the op. must be getting old when all this attention in certain area's does not grab your attention.

Rodney, back in 1994 when I had the first stent put in, I too, had that scared feeling of putting a probe from the groin through the body to the heart. wouldn't watch it at all. Have watched the last two procedures, one vascular stent and the finding of the bladder growth, quite interesting.
    regards, stan
