When it comes to PTSD I was amazed at the counseling services that are available at national spinal injuries centre in Stoke Mandeville people there who have had a traumatic injury are always offered counselling , the psychotherapist there have an excellent reputation and a doctorate combined with years of experience so when it comes to a one hour interview with the man from ATOS or capita I don't think these people have got a clue where it comes to understanding the non-visible range no problems that people have

As you know all I have taken a great interest in health and safety on the ground that has the factory manager engineering wise I always intended never to lose anybody on my watch we had some Close shaves a lot to do with badly driven forklift trucks but when you started to study health and safety you realised that a lot of serious injuries goes through cutting corners could have been avoided and as such I went on quite a few health and safety courses one of the scariest ones was An Officer from the fire brigade who visibly described some of the scenes that he'd been at and I must admit that's a place that I wouldn't ever wanted to be

The problem is when you look able-bodied and you can walk Like An able bodied man people wonder why you would want to claim with disability allowance and I think that it's very easy to pour scorn on people because of bipolar disorder or alcoholism and many of the things along the way without knowing the background

I know many people find health and safety and it's precautions a huge joke but the first health and safety course I did was related to that night in the North Sea and the way that it was blamed on a massive loss of life and a huge disaster on basically one-man not filling in the paperwork correctly which caused a problem followed by a chain reaction when you look back on that you can't believe it could be down to Simple paperwork . When it came to permits2work if the factory supervisors wouldn't shine off the permit then my men would not do the job as simple as that I've had a few rounds with upper management about my intransigent but when I suggested that I would forgo the permit to work system all I needed was a letter signed by them to tell me to ignore it nobody ever wrote that letter . It's probably a sad fascination reading disasters but I had a friend who work for an electricity supply company who had to clean up under a 11000 Volt switchboard where a man had inadvertently taken his mobile phone and answered it when it rang , forgetting he was working on live equipment . I've read some of these stories and the honest they leave me very cold so I think that I understand where PTSD comes from but then one of my grandchildren was offered counselling when a child in their class died of a cancer a couple of years ago and they felt that the children in the school needed that kind of psychiatric counselling to help them come to terms with a traumatic loss

I think this is where the system fails when it comes to benefits as people with stress disorders I very often the majority of people complaining that they have been rejected by the system

As regards children Rob , I grew up with a very bad stutter, a lot of kids in those days did. It is one of the most demeaning impediments that can happen to a child and causes them to keep their mouth shut or face the consequences of derision by other kids. I learned myself by various means to get rid of this terrible affliction , unlike king George V1 who had speech therapists . One of my means of hiding it was if sent for a message to the shops , used to write the goods required and hand to the shopkeeper. I think more than likely this affliction which thank God I managed later to cast aside was probably caused by the trauma of the war years during the Blitz. Today kids would be treated as soon as noticed they had problems. However have sailed with grown ups at sea who never got over it. I felt really sorry for them and never made fun of. Cheers IS

    Rob.

Thank you for your posts on this subject. I particularly appreciate posts that I learn something, and touches my emotions, be it compassion or humor and are well written, yours were both.

Your post was so descriptive of the terrible affliction you live with I could almost feel your pain. I salute you sir as a truly brave and articulate man. It makes me ashamed to feel sorry for myself for, in comparison to what you undergo, my ailments are insignificant.

Many years ago, part of my job as Director of Food and Beverage of a large hotel was to assist the sales department in booking large conventions, I found a lead on a group called California Association of Handicapped People ( my best guess of the name). Myself and a convention sales rep attended their annual convention to make a presentation. My God! The awful afflictions from either birth or accident was beyond description. We had to sit through the programs before we could make our presentation. There were many skits presented, none asking for sympathy or whining. One was "Their World". Their world was one where the "handicapped" were the norm and the truly ambulatory were the ones with a problem. "The other was stupid things many "normal" do and say, they were laughing and taking the piss out us non-handicapped and having a grand old time.

Back in those days there were no handicapped ramps on the sidewalk/pavement to roads and they showed the insurmountable problem they had with a curb and just steps leading up to a door. They fought for things like ramps and elevators as well as escalators. I helped where I could and always will.

There was one other convention that effected my thinking That was the Assoc. of California Japanese-Americans, survivors and children of those interned during the second world war, but I'll save that for another day.

Your a very brave man Rob.

    JSW.

John, I too stuttered and went through the having kids pull tricks like, for instance, offering me candies and then "Say please." knowing damn well what I would go through trying to get past the "pppplease." and many more. Lucky for me I out grew it as the war years past.

However, I hate public speaking or being the center of attention in large groups. I'm a behind the scenes person.

There's no such thing as brave Rodney not in this world there are some men who done some very brave deeds but when it comes to dealing with the lot that you've been giving you just get on with it

When you find the other charities that deal with spinal injury concentrate on making your life as normal as possible you'll realise the little bit of disability that we put up with is just another step on life's Road . I can stand there for some of my tetraplegic friends think Ima imposta cripple not a real cripple like they say when you're in the state you tend to have a bit of a language towards each other

There is one charity that teaches tetraplegics how to fly small planes another that does mountain climbing with a rope on your wheelchair and you strapped into the seat while therefore you up sheer Cliff faces

We're going to be a bit of a crusty bunches well when you struggled over a couple of kerbs in a wheelchair not designed to do it because the Blue Badge Bay is full of somebody who is struggling with a mental disability I have known several of my tetraplegic and paraplegic colleagues very unfairly open their mouth and say something that's because they can be intolerant bunch of bastards . They are a great bunch of people that I come across all carrying a different Burden I regard it like a handicap horse race sometimes you're doing so well that you'll end up with a few pounds Extra in the saddle

I have met good friends who are people who have been involved in traumatic disasters others who were championship jockeys that played roly-poly with a horse people who have injured spinal cancer and spinal injury due to medical intervention a pretty young girl who crossed the M25 motorway on foot under the influence of alcohol along with the usual mixture of motorbike riders and car enthusiasts after they've had some of the counselling that they desperately need they all look at every day as being a new day and a new challenge so when I compare what I've got to watch some of them have got and some of got to look forward to and I am 50 years further down the road than they are then I become quite humble

And in this country they have toughened up on the personal injuries payment scheme as they replaced the disability living allowance and some people who can walk with sticks can play football but slowly and get severely depressed have been treated quite badly by the new process of the new rules . But I have learnt on this journey that I am undertaking that you end up with little sympathy and a big set of ambitions

In general my fellow tetraplegics have a very weird sense of humour and a strange pigheadedness they're also very forthright talk to their carer instead of them and some will drive the wheelchair into the back of your ankles to remind you that they are not actually completely a vegetable yet

I have likened this journey to trekking in the Himalayas each day you climb upper rough mountain paths you say what the hell am I doing here and each night you look back and you say what a beautiful view when I look back and see how far I've come today

And when it comes to fighting the Department of Work and Pensions the National Health Service and Uncle Tom Cobley and all watch out for the guy in the wheelchair he's the one that has researched it taken advice on it and will give you hell over it whatever he's complaining about

Good to see recognition that some people with lifelong conditions shouldn't be reassessed continually. However, who decides what the the “most severe, lifelong conditions” are?

Quite simply as part of your presentation for the pip award you would normally send medical evidence in and part of that medical evidence would come in most cases from a consultant neurosurgeon or a consultant in your disease and it is that consultants report that the prognosis is taken from

Rob. I stand by my post.

    Cheers, Rodney

P.s. I've hiked in the foothills of Mt. Annapurna, 10th highest mountain in the world. It was a bit rough (elevation) and the track hard going, but I knew what I was doing and why. "Because it was there," first said by Sir Edmond Hillary who went just a bit higher up the Himalayas than I did. A couple of days home a few soaks in a hot bath and I was right as rain.

Except they have all that already, anything you provide must be new - within the last 12 months.

Few long term have anything new and £20 - 30 for a doctors letter which often does not help.

It seems they just are there to turn you down, hoping you will not bother with a tribunal.

Reporting to a secretary at the DWP whom takes what the agency tells them as gospel.

1 I used the consultant neurosurgeon that I see at Stoke Mandeville national spinal injuries centre there was certainly no charge made and the guy is a specialist a neurological complaints expert where has your ordinary GP is not necessarily a specialist making the consultant more important they are less likely to argue with a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons who is writing an honest report than they are with the generalisation of your general practitioner

Whether you have a neurosurgeon or a stroke specialist or a cardiothoracic specialist it is that consultant that you need the report from and if the report is current it makes your case that much stronger

I had a review with a driveability centre who agreed that I could resume driving using a vehicle with hand controls the problem that the DVLA seem to concentrate on is whether you were going to suddenly black out while driving my particular disease this doesn't happen I had waited weeks and weeks and weeks and everytime I approached them they decided answer I took a phone call from the consultants secretary that they had eventually ridden Dubai neurosurgeon and asked his opinion 48 hours later after receiving his letter my licence was granted they don't argue with the expert
