    Default Close call

Having read with interest the recent thread regarding sun damage,Ihope you find this of interest.
Mowing the lawn last June,I caught my left hand on a large thorn bush, blood everywhere so stick a plaster on and finish the job.
The following day a large lump appeared never gave it a second thought, however after a further period the lump increased in size.Saw my local G.P who referred me to a skin specialist. They photographed the hand and took a sample for biopsy.I was recalled in seven days.On entering the guys office his opening shot was "I dont mean going on holiday but have you ever spent long periods in the sun"??I explained the Merch and seven years in the middle East.He then informed me I hadActimic Keratosis,in laymans term Skin Cancer. So into the operating theatre and 42 stiches later and the removal of whatever,I was free to go.
Along comes October and low and behold another lump in about the same position as the first. In December back in the theatre more stiches
and a one handed xmas. The good news is ,I received the all clear in February this year, and to think all the hours laid on deck in order to obtain the perfect bronzy.
Kind Regards to All on this Wonderful Site

    Hi Mike,
I have been treated for actinic keratosis for the last two years now on the scalp. Every day I have to massage `SOLARAZE and dermal into my scalp.
It is a bit easier now, but still gets scabby
I had two cancer tumours cut out last year, one as big as my finger from my shoulder.

I had no lumps, just very faint freckle that had been there for a few years. The Surgeon said it would have killed me if untreated, didnt know I had it.
All because never wore a hat on deck and no shirts.

Yes I thought it was a hat John, but we'll have to wait for one of our Antipodean cousins to explain the derivation, perhaps !.It's a different language down under isn't it?

A Revy is a cap that you made yourself, , an old sheet, a plate, draw a couple of rings, and sew them together and a piece of joint packing cut to shape and covered with the cloth and sewn on for the brim and a band of cloth about 2inches wide
Known as a Steaming Revy when I was a lad, I made many of them,

Made many of them over the years, usually from the leg of my old jeans, on the very rare occasion, if we had a very good bosun (or one who was careless with the storeroom key) made of white duck canvas, have even seen grips for the pay off day made of cavas, also sandals, memories eh, kt

OK Brian, but what's the derivation of the word 'revy' ?
No,I'm not letting it go.I'm 64 now and don't want to cark it without ever knowing where it comes from--sad really aren't I ?
